When I booked this trip months ago, I didn't realize that it included a three hour hike with a lot of climbing. Luckily our tour guide Leoncio was very flexible and adjusted his tour to match my fitness level. We began the day with a stop in Vila Franca for an opportunity to try the delicious Queijada de Vila Franca - a local specialty that is so tasty and unique! Then we headed to Lake Furnas and instead of hiking in the mountains, we went for a walk all around the beautiful lake. At one point, we stopped for a picnic lunch that Leoncio provided for us. After circling the whole lake, we arrived at the place where we were able to watch the men taking the famous Furnas stew pots from the ground. We continued to the Botanical Gardens and enjoyed a nice soak in a thermal pool. Next up was lunch in a local restaurant where we were able to try the famous stew of Furnas first-hand. Yummy! After lunch, we visited some other hot springs in Furnas, before Leoncio brought us to a tea plantation. He is very knowledgeable and described for us in great detail how tea in produced on the island. We enjoyed a cup of tea before heading back to the hotel. What a fun and memorable day! Highly recommended!
