About this activity
Get off the beaten track in a comfortable 4WD with an informative, friendly and professional nature guide. Go where the traditional tourist circuits cannot to have a different view of the Volcanic Complex of Sete Cidades. Depart your Ponta Delgada hotel between 8:30am and 9am and enjoy views of the green pastures of Arrifes on the way to Pico do Carvão. Stop at the Pico do Carvão viewpoint to take in a stunning view of both the North and South coast of the island, as well as the Fogo Volcano.
Discover Serra Devassa, a formation of volcanic cones alignments, where we find a large number of lakes and small ponds, such as Carvão, Empadadas, and Canário. Then, stop at Mata do Canário to view Lagoa do Canário. Take a 15 minute walk to the Grota do Inferno viewpoint and experience a dazzling view of three lakes located inside the Sete Cidades Volcano: Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa de Santiago, and Lagoa Azul das Sete Cidades.
Pass through Muro das Nove Janelas, a part of an aqueduct that supplied Ponta Delgada until the mid-twentieth century. Head to Santo António parish where you can lunch and enjoy the Azorean gastronomy in a local restaurant with a panoramic view of the north coast of the island (own expense).
After lunch, forge on to the Cumeeiras viewpoint and get a new perspective of Lagoa das Sete Cidades. Continue through the rim of the volcano in a land route towards the parish of Sete Cidades. There, enjoy a small walk next to the margins of the Lake, see the Tunnel, visit São Nicolau church, cross the Rêgos bridge, and enjoy a ride to the little peninsula.
Leave the inside of the volcano behind and head to Vista do Rei viewpoint with stops at Lagoa de Santiago and Cerrado das Freiras viewpoints on the way. Follow the south rim of the volcano, enjoy the landscape of the caldera and head to Escalvado viewpoint. Feel the Atlantic ocean breeze and enjoy the panoramic view of Ponta da Ferraria and Mosteiros parish and its islet.
The last stop of the day is at Ilha Sabrina viewpoint located in the parish of Ginetes. Get a wide view of the Ponta da Ferraria, its lighthouse and part of the Natural Monument of Pico das Camarinhas.
Follow the South coast route back to Ponta Delgada and you will be dropped off back at your hotel around 5:45pm.
