About this activity
The Fogo Volcanic Complex, features an abundance of species of endemic flora and secondary volcanism manifestations, that consists on fumaroles and hot springs. The caldera of the Fogo Volcano is the smallest caldera collapse of the island of São Miguel, with about 15 thousand years. Given to its location in altitude, it is the most natural area and with the less human intervention suffered. It is an important hydrologic resource being classified as a Nature Reserve since 1974.
Because of its structure, it plays an extremely important role particularly in the replacement of underground water, regulation of the water cycle, biomass production, retention of sediments and nutrients and is therefore classified as Ramsar site.
On a 4WD vehicle departing from Ponta Delgada we will head to Pico da Barrosa, where at the top we encounter the beautiful Lagoa do Fogo.
Down the northwest flank of the Fogo volcano, we find the natural monument of Caldeira Velha, a major Geosite, composed of fumaroles and thermal spring water. Secondary volcanism area with rocky hills covered by lush vegetation with a cascade of thermal hot water, where a thermal bath is recommended.
On the way towards Ponta Delgada, we will stop at the refreshing waterfall scenery of Salto do Cabrito. The course on/off road may vary according the climate conditions.

We had THE best day with Jose. We only wish we have booked other tours with him. He took us to some amazing spots, took loads of photos for us and knew EVERYTHING about his island and talked about it with such infectious pride. We had the best day of entire trip on this tour- we honestly cannot recommend him enough and cannot wait to go back to the island and do a tour with him again.
We had visited the Azores on a trip across the Atlantic and looked up alternatives to ship tours provided in view of price. Found this one with Jose, who met us early along with 2 others and ended up with an amazing experience lasting 4.5hours. He is so enthusiastic about his island and had so much knowledge to impart to us. The off road was super and saw a lovely waterfall that the tour buses would not have been able to visit. It has been one of the places on my bucket list and will certainly try to visit again. So much more to see. The botanical gardens with thermal pools etc were beautiful. Jose showed up right on time. In our four hours we saw an incredible amount of the island. Because he had a 4WD vehicle we were able to go where most other tours probably couldn't go. I would recommend Jose to everyone.
