Built in 1835 by the British to watch out for potential riots in Port-Louis before the abolition of slavery. It is situated on a hill overlooking the city and the harbor.

Saint Louis Cathedral in Port Louis is among the oldest church in Mauritius. Built in 1814/15 and promoted to Cathedral in 1847, the church is the final works of Governor Sir Robert Farquar. The site of the church was however identified in the years 1750s sometimes after the departure of Mahe de La Bourdonnais, who had then selected another site for the construction of a place of worship for the inhabitants of Port Louis. Mahe de La Bourdonnais suggested the church to be erected on the current site of the Supreme Court but due to certain restrictions of the proposed site; possibility of further enhancements, water canals etc, the choice was disregarded.

The Kwan Tee PagodaThe Kwan Tee or Guan Di Pagoda is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere and the oldest one in Mauritius. Located at Les Salines, on a Longitude of -20°9'42.12" and Latitude 57°29'31.2", it faces the sea and against the mountains. Its construction and location abides by the principles of spirituality. The pagoda is a very peaceful place with its majestic piece of land and beautiful gardens full of coconut trees in the front of the yard and at the back and a few seasonal fruit trees. The Kwan Tee pagoda is an oasis of peace and tranquility though located in one of the most busiest and stressful place and capital of Mauritius. It is a perfect place for meditation.

The Blue Penny Museum is an art and history museum that is wholly devoted to Mauritius.

It houses some prestigious collections, which are true testimony of the historical and cultural wealth and diversity of Mauritius, in a stunning layout. The museum was inaugurated in 2001 and has been designed with unyielding attention to quality in the selection of the works on display, the written descriptions, the layout and the development of interpretation aids.

The tour of the museum ends with the beautiful yet tragic story of a mythical couple, Paul and Virginie.

After having moved around between the Company Garden (Jardin de la Compagnie) and the actual place of the Theatre for quite some time during the early colonial times, the Central Market finally settled in the where was previously the ‘Bassin des Chaloupes’ and its current location. The building we can see is standing since 1839. Quite a history it possesses!

In the district of Port Louis, lies the 1,640 m2 site where the modern indentured labour diaspora began. In 1834, the British Government selected the island of Mauritius to be the first site for what it called ‘the great experiment’ in the use of ‘free’ labour to replace slaves. Between 1834 and 1920, almost half a million indentured labourers arrived from India at Aapravasi Ghat to work in the sugar plantations of Mauritius, or to be transferred to Reunion Island, Australia, southern and eastern Africa or the Caribbean. The buildings of Aapravasi Ghat are among the earliest explicit manifestations of what was to become a global economic system and one of the greatest migrations in history.

Stop At: Port Louis Centre Post Office, Port Louis, Mauritius

Found in the Capital City of Port Louis, the Central Post Office (also known as the General Post Office) dates back since the early Colonial period. The building was erected in 1868, but was inaugurated in December 1870 by Governor Gordon. The Post Office now acts as a Postal Museum showing the history of the Postal Services in Mauritius ranging from old stamps to even some railway history as previously the Postal Services were effected through railway stations acting also as Post Offices in a certain way. We can also notice that this wide space in front of the Colonial building we can see in the above picture has also disappeared, and replaced by the motorway which passes in front of it.
