About this activity
Our driver will pick-you up to take you to meet our local guide for a memorable walking tour in the heart of our capital city. Comfortable shoes, sun hat and light clothes are highly recommended.

Meet the local guide at The Champ de Mars Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse race track in Port Louis, Mauritius. The Mauritius Turf Club is the oldest horse-racing club in the Southern Hemisphere and the second oldest in the world.

You will walk along one of the most important streets of Port Louis - passing by a pagoda, the St Louis Cathedral and the Supreme Court before reaching the Musee de La Photographie.

Walking past the Treasury Building, the Place d'Armes and the Parliament, you will head towards the Apravasi Ghat museum and Unesco's world heritage. the 1,640 m2 site where the modern indentured labour diaspora began.

A few meters away, you will visit our Postal Museum which is set in one of the oldest buildings on the Port Louis waterfront and which was inaugurated in 1868. The postal museum opened in 1995 and is a testimony to the major events that marked the history of the postal services in Mauritius from its origin in 1772.

Our local guide will take you for an introduction to Mauritian street food in the buzzy and colourful Port Louis central market. Here you will find a selection of some of the island's renowned gato pima (chilli bites), dholpurri (an Indian-style chapati made of yellow lentils and flour), roti (or farata), boulettes (Chinese steamed dumplings) and sweet alouda, a rose flavored milky drink similar to falooda.

Next, walk along the crowded streets around the market to find stationary vendors selling tasteful fruit and vegetable pickles. These are lightly brined and usually pineapple, mango, white cucumber, Chinese potato and sweet and sour tamarind paste. The vendor will pack it for you in a plastic bag and you’re invited to add salt and chilli to your taste.

Walk through the Caudan Waterfront shopping mall to proceed to The Blue Penny Museum which is unique in that it is the only museum in the whole world to own and permanently exhibit the famous Mauritius ‘POST OFFICE’ stamps dated 1847.

Before boarding the car to take you back, you can enjoy a quick shopping in the crafts market inside the Caudan Waterfront
