About this activity
Begin your day trip with 9am pickup at your Prague hotel. Hop aboard your private coach with your guide and personal group and enjoy the relaxing ride to Dresden.
Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with many of its cultural and artistic institutions. After the city center was destroyed in the World War II bombings, a restoration began, including the reconstruction of the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semperoper, and the Dresden Frauenkirche.
Take a walking tour around the royal buildings, some of the most impressive architecture in Dresden. See the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicist styles of Dresden Castle, the seat of the royal household from 1485, as well as Zwinger Palace, now home to the royal art collections.
Continue past Brühl's Terrace and the Hofkirche, the church of the royal household. The crypt of the Wettin Dynasty is located within the church, and King Augustus III of Poland is buried in the Cathedral, as one of very few Polish Kings to be buried outside the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
Then head to one of Germany's most famous opera houses, the Semperoper. First opened in 1841, it has hosted premieres of famous works by Richard Strauss, Carl Maria von Weber, and Richard Wagner.
Next, take a look at the impressive domed cathedral of the Frauenkirche. The original structure graced Dresden's skyline for two centuries before collapsing in the February 1945 bombing, and was rebuilt from a pile of rubble between 1994 and 2005. Head inside to see the altar, reassembled from nearly 2,000 fragments.
Round out the day with a visit to the Striezelmarkt, one of Germany's oldest documented Christmas markets, first founded in 1434. Explore the stalls filled with handmade wooden ornaments, steaming pots of mulled wine, candle pyramids, and more. Your day trip will conclude with private transportation back to your hotel in Prague.
