About this activity
Learn about the most important events of the 20th century during Nazism and Communism in Czechoslovakia and visit the places where they happened.
The tour begins in front of the most feared police station during Communism located in Bartolomějská street. Listen to the stories of how the secret police worked and why each person had to be careful about talking about certain things in the public. From there you will go the National Avenue where the Velvet revolution was happening in 1989, leading to the collapse of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia. The peaceful demonstration turned into violent suppression which triggered the massive demonstrations around the country.
You will continue to the crypt where the parachutists where hiding after the assaciantion of the Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich in June 1942. After being betrayed by another parachutist, the hiding place - crypt in a church close to the Charles Square - was surrounded by the Germans. The Czech heroes were shot there or rather poisened themselves. In any case, this museum is definitelly worth visiting.
Further you continue to the Wenceslas Square which was important for the 1968 Soviet occupation. You can still see the white dots of the shooting on the National museum. In front of the building you find a monument of Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc, two young students who set themselves on fire and burnt themselves on the top of the Wenceslas Square as a protest against the passive acceptance of the occupation by the Czechoslovak society.
From there you walk to the Jewish quarter where you learn about the Jewish Museum during the Second World War, why was the former Jewish ghetto never destroyed, or where had the Jews relocate to during the war.
The last stop will be the monument of Jan Palach on the Philosophical faculty close to the Old Town Square.
