About this activity
Get out of the city for the day and visit the historic township of Soweto for an unforgettable cookery class. Your foodie adventure begins with an early start in central Johannesburg. Your guide will be waiting for you in Nelson Mandela Square, the perfect place for a selfie with South Africa’s favourite son. Via an air-conditioned private vehicle, we will then head off to Soweto, stopping along the way to admire the impressive FNB World Cup 2010 Football Stadium. We will hook up with our friendly local cook and head over to the local produce market and community farm to source the freshest of ingredients for our lunch. As we shop, your guide will chat about typical South African produce and dishes.

Time for a spot of culinary education now, as your two hour cookery class begins. Our class will take place outdoors, weather permitting, in an educational kitchen. You will learn how to make some of the most popular local dishes and find out more about their origins. Potjiekos involves slow cooking the food in a cast iron pot over a fire. You will have the opportunity to make either a chicken or vegetable version, alongside a dollop of pap (similar to polenta) and chakalaka spicy sauce to give it that South African kick!

Once all the prep is completed and our lunch is cooking, we’ll treat you to a unique South African beer tasting experience, involving a traditional ceremony where a local drink is shared amongst the group. This is a great photo opportunity too! If you fancy another drink, you can purchase one from the bar. After a busy morning, we’ll sit down together to enjoy the lunch we have prepared, chatting some more about local life and what it was like to grow up during apartheid.

After that, we’ll thank our chef and head back towards the big city. Before you go, don’t forget to ask for more tips on what else to see, do and eat during your time in Jo’burg.
