Two days ago, my girlfriend and me did the Pilanesberg trip. It was absolutely breathtaking. We saw more then ten elephants (5 of them walked directly to our vehicle), about six giraffes, several hippos, a black rhino, two lions and umpteen of zebras, antelopes rare birds and even a jackal. Thys, our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and always able to find places where animals can be found.
A great option if you don't have time or ability to make it to Kruger but want to see rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and impala. Amazing how close they were sometimes; so different seeing them in their natural setting than in a zoo. Beautiful national park, lots of animals (no guarantee of course but lots of animals = more potential for sightings); same style (though not scale) of safari you'd get at the bigger parks but closer to Jo'burg. Overall great value, good alternative.
