Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL TO TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE

Stop At: Tambopata River, Puerto Maldonado Peru
Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you ten minutes to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. After packing only your necessary gear for the coming days we will drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port. From the Tambopata River Port you will go by boat to the lodge. During the boat transfer, you will pass the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve’s checkpoint. You will have the option of hiking out at night.

Day 2: CHUNCHO CLAY LICK – TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER

Stop At: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, Av. Leon velarde # 122 Boulevard Plaza de Armas, Tambopata National Reserve Peru
The boat transfer to the Peru Tambopata Research Center will take about four and a half hours. After one and a half hours as we cross the confluence with the Malinowski River, we will leave the final traces of human habitation behind. After two hours from Refugio Amazonas, we will stop at the Chuncho claylick. You will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium rich clays of the riverbank. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. Afterwards, you will hike to the Overlook Trail.

Day 3: MACAW CLAY LICK – FOREST HIKE – POND PLATFORM – NIGHTWALK

Stop At: Tambopata National Reserve Peru
Early in the morning, you will go to the Macaw Clay lick, at dawn it is possible to see dozens of macaws and hundreds of parrots that feed themselves on the clay lick at the riverbank. After breakfast, you will walk down the Floodplain Trail, during this five-kilometer trail you will try to find Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. After lunch, you will go to the Pond Platform. This platform in the middle of the river is a great place to spot ducks, sunbittern, hoatzin, woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets. In the night you go out for a hike to find the animals that live at night time.

Day 4: MACAW CLAY LICK -TERRA FIRME TRAIL – PALM SWAMP TRAIL

Stop At: Tambopata National Reserve Peru
Early in the morning, you will go to the Macaw Clay lick, at dawn it is possible to see dozens of macaws and hundreds of parrots that feed themselves on the clay lick at the riverbank. After breakfast, you will walk the Terra Firme Trail. The surroundings during this trail are very different from the other parts of the rainforest. During this trail, you will look for Saddleback tamarins and rare tapir tracks. After lunch, you will do the Palm Swamp Trail. Here you will learn more about important plants and food sources in the rainforest.

Day 5: TRANSFER OUT

Stop At: Tambopata River, Puerto Maldonado Peru
Today we retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, our office and the airport. Depending on airline schedules, this may require dawn departures. At the airport your Tambopata Peru adventure will end.

  • Please bring your own rain poncho. In the Amazon, the weather could change suddenly in the rainforest and you might get wet.
  • Please take with you some plastic bags, to protect your camera and important documents; a headlight, because at night it becomes very dark; and a bottle of water.
  • If you like to enjoy watching Animals, please get some binoculars (10×40 are much better).
  • The operator reserves the right to change the itinerary without previous notice due to weather, National Park regulations or notifications and unforeseeable circumstances.
  • Inform yourself about food safety when traveling to tropical countries. Take the necessary precaution to avoid food poisoning (always wash your hands before eating, don’t eat ‘street food’, only eat peeled fruits, etc.).
  • The operator cannot take any responsibility for any illnesses or missed meals & tours due to an illness.
