About this activity
The National Park is located in one of the most dry, arid areas of the Dominican Republic and mainly covers untouched coastline with mangrove jungles. The coast extends along the biggest coral reef formation of the Dominican Republic. Discover the wonders of nature. Snorkel and you will see the incredible beauty of this unique tropical reef, rising from the ground of the sea up to the surface. It is full of colorful coral and tropical fish.
Have a drink, swim in the clear, warm waters or simply relax on the white sand. The professional crew will be prepared to fulfill your wishes for a drink, explain the wonders of nature and assist you on the guided snorkeling tour to the outer reef. You too will have the possibility to visit the mangrove jungles of the Montecristi National Park, see untouched nature in its lagoons and channels and view lots of wildlife, mainly birds. The mangrove is the only tree which grows in salt water, protecting the coastline, even with the strong winds of a hurricane.
Close to Punta Rusia is the bay of Estero Hondo, only 10 minutes away. Here, the last manatees of the Dominican Republic live inside a protected area, but with some luck, you can sometimes see them inside the mangroves. The island is of unbelievable beauty. A small, white sandbar in the middle of crystal clear, turquoise waters is surrounded by a perfect, nearly untouched, round coral reef.

Paradise Island deserves its name. A beautiful spot although not the picture seen in this ad with lots of coral and sea life. The island has a few palm leaf covered areas so you can get out of the sun if you like and you can put your things down without getting them full of sand. The snorkeling guide led us around the edge of the reef and a boat was close if you got tired my daughter took advantage of this. The reef is incredible. If you go on this tour simply for the snorkeling aspect, you won't be disappointed. If you are thinking that you will see any wildlife in the mangrove though you will be disappointed. The boats go so fast, which was fun, but not the animal viewing opportunity I thought it would be. The description states You too will have the possibility to visit the mangrove jungles of the Montecristi National Park, see untouched nature in its lagoons and channels and view lots of wildlife, mainly birds. We did not stop in Punta Rusia and when I asked the guide about the possibility of seeing a manatee while we were racing through the mangroves he said there was no chance. That said, the reef was amazing and worth the trip. My three stars reflects my disappointment with the Monte Cristi National Park tour. We also stopped at a cigar manufacting plant which hadn't been part of the description. It was interesting however I would have preferred to spend time in the National Park. Had I known that the tour really only included time at the reef, I may have chosen a different excursion.
