About this activity
Take this open safari truck to see the real Dominican Republic, beyond your resort in Punta Cana.
Our first stop is the home of a traditional Dominican family, where we take a short tour and talk to some of the family members. From there, we stroll the grounds of the plantation and learn the process of making coffee and coconut oil; your guide will also be sure to point out local fruits and vegetation.
Next is a stroll through the beautiful butterfly garden! Watch them flutter around as you learn a bit about the different varieties. As you make your way about a small gift shop, we'll view a chocolate demonstration where we watch workers making chocolate first hand. Don't worry, there are plenty of free samples! Plus, the opportunity to buy some freshly made chocolate of different flavors. You also have the chance to buy the famous Mamajuana, cigars, and other local products.
Leaving the country ranch and traveling towards Higuey, the largest city in the Dominican Republic's eastern region, the excursion makes a stop at a local school where the safari team sponsors a community project that benefits several villages with basic education. The tour then visits one of the country's most famous churches - the Basilica de Higuey, dedicated to Our Lady of the Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic.
From here we make our way back into the mountainous countryside to enjoy a buffet-style Dominican lunch overlooking gorgeous mountain scenery. With bellies full of rice, beans, and meat, we take a quick visit to the river to relax for a minute. Sit by the water and take advantage of the view for some great pictures!
Leaving the mountains, head toward the sensational Macao Beach. Spend almost an hour enjoying this breathtaking coast. Refreshments are served while you take a dip in the waist high water. This is the perfect, relaxing way to end a wonderful day full of new and educational experiences.
You'll see parts of the country that you cannot see from your hotel. Join us on this cultural journey!
