About this activity
During the twentieth century at least two hundred thousand whales were captured. The global population decreased by more than 90%. After the disappearance of some species, an international commission was created in 1949. Some countries (Spain, France, Holland, England) gave up this activity voluntarily. To prevent the extinction of the family, an international moratorium was instituted in 1966 and continues to apply today. Each year, there are several thousands that come in the warm and calm waters of the Caribbean, in order to mate or give birth. They come in the Bay of Samaná, considered one of the best places in the world to observe them, between mid-January and the end of March.eel.
