Heli Hike Walking with Penguins & Seals

About this activity
We depart Queenstown and travel along one of the most stunning roads in Queenstown to the head of the lake and Glenorhcy. This stretch of road from Queenstown to Glenorchy was recently voted by Lonely Planet as “one of the most beautiful drives in the world” and you’ll see why when we stop at the Bennett’s Bluff lookout.
Here we board a helicopter flight to Martins Bay, and the head of the Hollyford track where we are able to encounter the native Fiordland Crested Penguins in their natural habitat. We should also encounter seals and other native species, e.g. Wood Pigeons, Kakariki &/or Fantails.
If time allows, we can also enjoy an eco-encounter walk through native bush. Once we arrive back in Glenorchy, we will stop to enjoy either morning tea or afternoon tea by the lake before returning to Queenstown.
The trip includes a stunning flight over the Southern Alps with the option to stop at Milford Sound or land on a glacier for an additional cost for the helicopter, often a high point for an amazing photo opportunity.
The best time of year to see the penguins is during the breeding season from July to November. They may also occasionally be seen during the moulting season from mid-January to early March.
Departure time options: 8.30am or 1.30pm
Grade: Easy
Walking distance: 1 hour
Duration: 4.5 hours
Season: Year Round
