The Galapagos archipelago lies 600 miles due west of mainland Ecuador and is a province of that South American republic. The equator runs through the northernmost islands. On the walks, visitors follow marked paths and are accompanied by a naturalist guide at all times. Some islands have excellent swimming beaches and snorkeling areas.
