About this activity
See Þingvellir National Park a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004 where the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, was created in 930 A.D. and where earth's crust splits into the Eurasian and North American continents . Visit the quaint farm of Efstidalur farm where you’ll receive a warm welcome and a friendly introduction to the workings of a modern, Icelandic farm. You can get up close and see the farm at work through the farm café window that looks directly on to the cows munching hay. Ready for some mouthwatering treats? Choose from a rainbow of colours from their freshly made ice cream, boost your health with Icelandic’s wonder food - Skyr, and enjoy the taste of Mysa – a traditional dairy soft drink favoured by the Vikings. And that’s just to get you started. Make sure to leave room for their home made soup and bread, their roast beef and fresh trout straight from the waters of the River Útey. After these delicacies it’s time to stretch your legs and explore Gullfoss waterfall. This cascading waterfall can be enjoyed right at the water’s edge. You can walk down to the rocks where all the action is happening or climb above to the viewing platform for a birds eye view. Then there’s more water to explore at the hot springs and bubbling hot pots area around Geysir. Get your camera at the ready for sprouting Strokkur, which frequently gushes water up to 30 meters in the air. After these prized national landmarks, we stop at Friðheimar, for some of the tastiest tomatoes. Indeed, it’s a little piece of the Mediterranean in the heart of Iceland, thanks to a series of greenhouses that produce tomatoes all year round. What makes these tomatoes taste so great? You’ll learn just that in an introduction to the operation of growing them before tasting a range of delicious foods all in the warmth of their greenhouses: look forward to Bruschetta, their home grown vegetables and raise a glass and taste their mouthwatering tomato schnapps. Finally we take you back in time to introduce you to some Icelandic history at Íslenski Bærin, one of Iceland‘s best preserved turfed farms. Turf houses are an old tradition in Iceland and in keeping with this you can take your taste buds on a culinary adventure back in time and try some of the most traditionally Icelandic food: flat bread and smoked lamb, dry fish and seaweed, pancakes with whipped cream and rhubarb jelly and fresh honey and herbal tea. All mouthwatering delights. With your senses and stomach fully fed both by Icelandic nature and Icelandic delicacies we then drive back to Reykjavik.
