Glacier Lagoon and South Coast Iceland: Private Tour from Reykjavik

About this activity
We head straight southward to two beautiful waterfalls on the South Coast, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Seljalandsfoss is just over 60m surrounded by beautiful cliffs and slopes. There is a footpath behind the waterfall where depending on road conditions we can actually take a walk behind the waterfall for a different view. Skogafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, carrying water from the two powerful glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. Also measures around 60m in drop, it boasts a width of 25m. On sunny days it’s not unusual to to see double rainbow through the spray created by the waterfall.

We continue towards the east on the south coast to our last stop Reynisfjara. Here we will find not only black beach, but more notably the basalt rock columns and cave, and sea stack.

We then proceed to Vik, which is the southernmost village in Iceland. After a brief stop at Vik we will check out Eldhraun lava field. This lava field was created in one of the biggest eruption in recorded history. The eruption from 1783 to 1784 might even have been one of the causes of the French revolution due to the catastrophic impact it had on climate in not only Iceland but also Europe. Eerie formations of lava tubes are found here, in the warmer months they look like a field of moss bubbles!

As we move on to Skaftafell National Park, we can do an optional glacier hike at Svinafellsjokull glacier tongue, which is one of the 30+ outlets of the vast Vatnajokull. During the hike, experienced glacier guide will run us through the basics of how to safely use essential equipments like crampons and axes so that we can enjoy the panoramic view of the glacial ice structures. Vatnajokull is the largest ice cap in Europe by volume. Average thickness of ice is 400m, with maximum thickness of 1,000m!

Our next stop is the magnificent glacier lagoon, Jokulsarlon. At Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon you will see amazing icebergs floating in the lagoon, so have your camera ready. The main lagoon measures about 7 square miles (20km2). Up until 1932 was covered in thick glacial ice, then the glacier started to retreat, and nowadays more than 330 feet (100m) of ice breaks away each year to reshape the lagoon and fill it with huge spectacular icebergs.

From Jokulsarlon we turn around and head back towards Reykjavik. It is one of the longer tours however it is definitely recommended for the travellers who are tight on time but would like to see more of the South Coast.
