Stop At: Golden Circle Route, Iceland

Get into the history of Iceland at Thingvellir National Park, witness the powerful beauty of a multi-tiered waterfall at Gullfoss and walk among bubbling geothermal pools at Geysir Geothermal Area.

Duration: 7 hours

Stop At: Thingvellir National Park, Thingvellir Iceland

Learn about some of the thrilling and somewhat gruesome history of Iceland at Thingvellir National Park. It’s significance is so great that it is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. You’ll walk the grounds where Icelandic democracy began and visit sites where Viking-era justice was carried out including the Drowning Pool and the Gallows Rock. Thingvellir is also the place where two tectonic plates are gradually separating creating a gorgeous landscape of steep cliffs and broad fields featuring Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Geysir, Haukadalur Iceland

The Great Geysir, the first of its name, resides in Haukadalur in the Geysir Geothermal Area. The entire area is bubbling with geothermal activity from steam vents to boiling mud pits and the real stars of the geothermal show, the geysers. All other geysers, the world over, are named for Geysir.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Strokkur, Haukadalsvegur, Geysir Iceland

While the Great Geysir erupts only occasionally these days, the last time being in 2016, nearby geyser Strokkur erupts regularly delighting onlookers by shooting hot water high into the air every few minutes.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Gullfoss, White River, Blaskogabyggd 801 Iceland

The most popular waterfall in Iceland is, without a doubt, Gullfoss (the golden falls). And that is saying quite a lot in a country that is home to thousands of waterfalls. Gullfoss is also considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Iceland and it is certainly one of the largest. Hearing the roar of the Hvita River as it plunges 32 meters over two tiers into the gorge below is exhilarating. On sunny days, rainbows are abundant in the mist rising from the falls and there are several paths available around the waterfall including one leading down to its bottom so come equipped with your raincoat and have your camera at the ready.

Duration: 1 hour

I was recently on a cruise ship that went to Iceland. The ship stopped in Reykjavik and offered a shore excursion called the Golden Circle to Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfloss Waterfalls, and the Geysir Geothermal area. The shore excursions was $209 per person, but, unfortunately, by the time we tried to sign up on the ship, the shore excursion was sold out. So, the morning that we docked in Reykjavik, my sister suggested we contact Viator. After telling her that I doubted that we would be able to get a tour for that same day, she persisted. So, since we had nothing to lose, we went on line and got in touch with Viator. Lo and behold! We were actually able to get a tour to the Golden Circle for that afternoon at 12:30. The price for the tour was a very reasonable $69 per person for a complete 6 1/2 hour tour! The tour was run by Gray Line, a local tour company in Iceland. The tour driver, Sosh, and guide, Christina, picked us up and others from my ship, promptly at the cruise terminal at 12:30 pm. We made one more stop to pick up a few others and by 1:00 pm we were on our way in a comfortable tour bus. Our guide was knowledgeable and her English impeccable, as she explained all that we were going to see. Our driver got us everywhere we needed to go safely. We got to see Thingvellir National Park, home of the divide in the North American and Euro-Asian tectonic plates. It was ruggedly beautiful. The Gullfloss Falls were gorgeous and powerful. The Geysir Geothermal area was like nothing I had ever seen before. Our Guide not only gave us a lot of interesting information about each area, she also had some charming and relevant anecdotes that she shared along the way to and from each stop. It was a most enjoyable learning experience. At each stop, she also gave specific instructions as to rest rooms, where we could eat, if we wanted, the location of where the bus would be, and the time we needed to be back at the bus. The funny thing is that at each stop we would run into people we knew who had taken the ship's more expensive shore excursion. Anyway, the Viator tour got us back to the ship safe and sound at the promised time. The tour guide and driver had made this a day to remember! Thank you, Viator, for making it possible for us to do the Golden Circle Tour at the last possible minute.

A well planned day out with adequate time at the waterfalls, geysirs and national park. Even a short tour of Reykavik as we dropped people at their hotels. Guide was well informed and easy to listen to.

Really interesting tour with a knowledgeable local guide. The golden circle was indeed golden. I especially loved the majesty of the region where the tectonic plates meet!

We visited Iceland on Marco Polo, a great little ship, and pre-booked this tour. I was a little concerned that we could have difficulty finding the pick-up point, but, no worries, the coach was waiting at the port. The guide (Jacob) was great, very amusing mixing information and humour, as we drove between the sites. I have done the Golden Circle tour before and was surprised at how many more visitors there were this time but also how access and viewing had been improved; it was almost possible to touch the water at Gullfoss and we experienced the spray from the falls. The drive was well organised and we returned to the port on time, with no problems.

The major sights on the tour, Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, were spectacular as always. The bus was comfortable and our guide, Samuel, was knowledgeable and personable. The three-star rating is because of Gray Line as a company. For one thing, they changed the pickup location for our hotel on three separate occasions with no communication that a change had been made. The tickets we downloaded on booking had one place, when we double checked prior to leaving the US, that had changed and it was just by chance that I saw it, then when I (fortunately) called to confirm the night before, the actual pickup location was a completely new one, not listed on any document. Once the tour started, Samuel announced that we would be back in Reykjavik at "about" 1630. At that point, about half the bus raised their hands and announced that they were on a cruise ship and had to absolutely be on board and checked back in to their ship by 1630 so the planned return to Reykjavik wasn't going to work. I listened to our guide and driver spend the next several minutes discussing where they could cut things out in order to make sure the cruise people got back in time. They did a great job of making it work, but we saw the bare minimum, unlike my first Golden Circle tour when the guide spent a few extra minutes here and there showing us other sights. Gray Line the company had to know that a group on the tour were from the ship, and they also advertise vans smaller than the bus we were on, so why not put the cruise people on their own vehicle and let the rest of us see the sights?? Cruises I've taken in the past always had transportation dedicated just to cruise passengers so the land excursion itinerary could be perfectly dovetailed with the ship's timing requirements.

Superb visit to the three stops on the Golden Circle. Our guide Gulla was great and provided lots of info on each of the points of interest. More was available as we walked to the sites. Hammi the driver handled the bus expertly and gave us a smooth safe trip. This was so much better than the tour available from the cruise AND CHEAPER BY FAR.

Was in Reykjavik for one day and this tour was perfect. The guide was very informative and provided interesting facts. They dont allow you to eat or drink on the bus, so eat before hand or you can purchase food at the stops as well.

It was just perfect. Fair price. We did every thing on time. The only problem was that in our way back to the ship we stop in lot off places for travelers. It took time.

It is so much better in person than the picture which gives a glimpse of these falls and the gorge below. Plus our guide explained how we were amid the North American and European tectonic plates which joined in the area and showed us how the land had subsided and where the junctions were. Stopped by Geysir as part of the tour which erupts every couple minutes but need to be quick with the camera

Our tour guide Holli was great. Dad jokes and all. Very knowledgeable in Icelandic history. Our weather was spectacular and the scenery speaks for itself. The waterfall with the mountains and glaciers in view was amazing. We had plenty of time at each spot and really enjoyed the gift shops. Marek was an excellent driver as well.

I loved every minute of this tour. We visited many interesting sites which were great to see. I recommend this tour. Here are some suggestions: Take a water-proof jacket or raincoat. If you want to get close to the waterfall, you should be prepared. The right shoes are important for this tour! I brought along my hiking, sturdy shoes. The way down to the waterfall might be slippery, so I was happy to have the proper shoes. Time for lunch is quite tight. I suggest you grab a quick sandwich and enjoy the view instead. We had a bigger lunch and then had to rush to see the waterfall.

Very pleased with the attractions we saw and lunch options during the day was better than expected. Our guide was very good and taking care of us, assisting with questions and queries. We were back later than expected due to an unscheduled stop which worked out fine in the end.

Very good with knowledgeable tour guide. Pack your thermals as very cold in January. Suitable timings for stop offs to see sights and to eat. (If you’re into pokemon go, plenty of stops on the way) :)

Tour was wonderful! Our guide was fantastic and was available for questions throughout the tour. The sights we were taken to were very beautiful and interesting. Would certainly book another tour with them. Only negative was that we were not dropped off at the same location that we were picked up from. Not a huge deal, but not being too familiar with the city, it just made us navigate a new area.
