Start your day with a pickup from your Reykjavik hotel, or meet your guide at Hafnarstræti in the Icelandic capital. Then, settle into your seat aboard a comfortable coach and relax as you journey out of the city.
Your first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a place of renowned natural beauty. Not only is this a great spot to see the convergence of the European and North American continents, it’s also where, in the year 930, the Icelandic parliament was formed.
Continue on to Efstidalur farm where you’ll learn the inner workings of a modern Icelandic farm while filling up on locally made fare. Watch the farm in action while sitting in a cafe eating products that were produced right there. Munch on feta cheese and a unique dairy drink that was a popular libation with the Vikings. But that’s only the beginning — be sure to leave room for homemade soup and bread, roast beef and fresh trout from the river Útey.
Next, give your stomach a break and take wonder in the thundering Gullfoss waterfall. Visit natural hot springs and geysers that shoot water in the air an astounding 100 feet (30 meters). Make a pit stop at a large greenhouse, a tiny slice of the Mediterranean in Iceland, where farmers are cultivating unlikely vegetables, such as tomatoes.
Hungry yet? For your final stop, visit Islenskibærin, one of the island’s famous turf farms. In a house clad in turf, sample some of the best of Iceland’s fare including smoked lamb, dried fish, flatbread, and pancakes smeared in rhubarb jelly, and herbal tea.
Return to Reykjavik at the end of the tour, happy and fully fed on the bounty that is Icelandic cuisine.
