Journey to the Center of the Earth

1 day
About this activity
Starting with a direct morning pick up in Reykjavik and we will then proceed west towards Snaefellsness peninsula, driving along a picturesque route of dramatic landscapes. There will be short rest stop for refreshments and you can also gather any necessary supplies for the excursion ahead. There is a lot of diverse wildlife in Snaefellsnes peninsula, especially the bird species and there is even a seal colony. We will stop at a black sand beach near Ytri-Tunga farm, giving participants the chance to see these cute creatures up close. Following Snaefellsness peninusla is the scenic Arnarstapi village where you'll get the explore the impressive natural landscapes along the precipitous shoreline toward the small village of Hellnar. This is where we will stop for lunch. Afterwards, we will drive to Vatnshellir lava cave, which is situated in the Snæfellsjökull National Park, near the glacier that the French writer Jules Verne used as the setting for his famous adventure novel. The lava caving tour is optional, if you did not book the book you can choose to explore the area with your expert guide while the other guests go caving. Please note that you can also wait in the car if you wish. While visiting Vatnshellir you will get to descend into a subterranean wonder world of stalactites, stalagmites, and unique lava formations. The glow from your headlights may create eerie shapes and shadows, which swirl across the cave's walls. The fast and easy lava caving tour is an exciting and fun trip for the whole family. After exploring the curious underworld of Vatnshellir, we will proceed onwards to Djúpalónssandur, a black-pebbled beach with impressive views of the raging sea and interesting stories about the history of shipwrecks and adventures there. We will then depart from Djúpalónssandur beach and drive to our next destination, bypassing stunning natural scenery. Upon arrival at the northern side of Snæfellsnes peninsula, we will disembark and discover the Grundarfjörður fishing village. Surrounded by especially incredible mountains, this region is where one of the peninsula‘s most photographed classic landmarks Kirkjufell is located. This symmetrical mountain extends up to 463 m (1519 ft) from sea level. The name translates directly into “church mount” and you will see how it is aptly named. Our expedition will then take us from Grundarfjörður to a lava field named Berserkjahraun. According to Viking legends this is the site where two Swedish "berserkers“ created Iceland‘s first road and over to the south side of the peninsula through a highland pass. On our journey there we will also stop at a small and charming waterfall where you will get to take a short walk and take in all the wonder and beauty that Iceland's natural landmarks have to offer. Driving back to Reykjavik, there will also be time to visit the Natural Heritage Site of Gerðuberg, which is home to a magical belt of basalt columns in these unbelievably surreal geometric shapes. The tour ends when we drop you off at your hotel in Reykjavik, hoping you have made some unforgettable memories on this trip.
