Unleash Iceland: Northern Lights, Lava Tunnel and Skyr Tasting Tour from Reykjavik

About this activity

We’ll pick you up at your centrally located Reykjavik hotel or the BSI Bus Terminal, where you’ll board a comfortable, climate-controlled vehicle and begin our journey towards the newly-opened Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel. As we drive through the lava fields in Hellisheiði, our expert guides will share stories and folktales about the darkness, the Northern Lights, and the many creatures you might encounter in the Icelandic wilderness in the long nights of winter.

At the Lava Tunnel, you’ll be treated with hospitality and enjoy refreshments as we lead you on a surprising and delightful guided tour of the cave — focusing on darkness, folklore, and the spectacular colors of the cave walls themselves. These colors, a product of the oxidation of the various mineral types in the lava, offer a stunning visual spectrum… and a hint of what lies ahead when the Northern Lights appear.

After leaving the cave, we’ll drive to the small, friendly town of Hveragerði, where we will stop at the old and restored Skyr factory. Here you’ll enjoy an authentic Icelandic food taste experience, learn about the traditional Skyr, and taste the one and only brand-new TripAdvisor Skyr Cocktail. The Skyr Factory will close operation while your group is visiting, ensuring that the focus of the experience remains 100% on your comfort and enjoyment.

Then… we’ll begin our hunt for the Northern Lights. Earlier in the day, our guides will check the forecast to find the best spot to see the lights, and we’ll head off in search of this incredible phenomenon.

The lights are caused by cosmic rays, solar wind and magnetospheric plasma interacting with the upper atmosphere. Their charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, enter the atmosphere from above, causing ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents — generating the stunning light emissions we know as the Aurora Borealis. The experience of seeing these magnificent lights can be truly life-changing.

Please note that as the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, we cannot guarantee sightings.
