Pass By: Heimaey Island, Heimaey Island, Westmann Islands, South Region

Our destination Heimaey- the Home-island, 13,4 square km. The largest island in the Westman island arcipelago. Settled around the year 900 by herjólfur Bárðarson.
Westman islands are one of our best kept secrets, islands, skerries, volcanoes, Puffins and other seabirds, mountains and we can not forget the islanders and the fisherman community.
We drive from the city towards the harbour in Landeyar and then we sail with the ferry Herjólfur to Heimaey.

Stop At: Eldheimar, Gerdisbraut 10, Vestmannaeyjar 900 Iceland

The exhibition focuses on the 1973 volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar, without a doubt one of Iceland´s biggest natural disaster. Visitors get a glimpse into peoples lives on Heimaey before the eruption that would change their lives forever. The people of Heimaey had to leave their homes in the middle of the night and evacuate the island, many of them never saw their homes or any of their belongings ever again.
The show also covers the Surtsey eruption, the island that emerged from the ocean south of Heimaey in 1963. The Surtsey eruption lasted for almost 4 years and ever since only scientists have been allowed on the island in order to monitor how new ecosystems come to life.

Stop At: Storhofdi (Great Cape), Vestmannaeyjar Iceland

Stórhöfði is the southernmost point of Heimaey.
The cape was created in a volcanic eruption in the ocean some 6,000 years ago. The cape is 122 meters one of the windiest place in Iceland.
There’s a little green hut on Stórhöfði. Here you can watch the puffins in comfort. Inside you can find information about the puffin colony and the research that has been done over the past years.

Stop At: Eldfell, Iceland

Eldfell is a volcanic cone just over 200 metres high. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began on the eastern side of Heimaey on 23. january 1973.

Stop At: Landlyst Museum, Iceland

Skansinn the oldest structure on the island, 15th century fort built to defend the harbour.
Here we have Landlyst, the house was built in 1848, rebuilt in Skansinn. A former maternety hospital - now a museum.
Stafkirkjan - the wooden church - when we celebrated 1000 years of christianity Norvegians gave icelandars a church and it was decided that it should be build in Skansinn on Heimay.

Stop At: Storhofdi (Great Cape), Vestmannaeyjar Iceland

Stórhöfði (122m.) linked to the main island Heimaey by a narrow isthmus, from erupstion from Helgafell 5000 years ago. And the view from the top is great ( keep in mind on a brihgt day).
There is a small birdwatching hut for Puffin viewing and of course other birds too.
We will add Brimurð and Kleif to that attraction.

Pass By: Heimaklettur (Home Rock), Trailhead at the end of Hildarvegur, port of Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Iceland

The highest rock in the Westman islands and was formed from an eruption about 40.000years ago it stands steep from the ocean and the top you can see green grass hills where you might see sheep.

Stop At: Herjolf's Valley (Herjolfsdalur), Iceland

The valley is named after the first settler on the island.
It is a 10.000 year old crater. Next to the valley is a golf course unique, you have the ocean, mountains and the history all around you.
