About this activity
Upon leaving your hotel in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Barra da Tijuca, Sao Conrado, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Leme, Botafogo, Flamengo, Downtown Rio we’ll drive towards Cosme Velho neighborhood. On the way we’ll pass Palacio Guanabara and start the day going all the way up to the summit of Corcovado Mountain at 2,100 feet to visit the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue.
The monument, located inside the Tijuca National Park, is reachable by train or van, and the ride through Floresta da Tijuca is quite pleasant. Going by van we’ll make a quick stop at the Paineiras Visitors Center and take a shuttle van to reach the monument. The train does not stop at the visitors center. At the monument we’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city.
The second point of interest is Rio’s Botanical Garden near the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake and next to the Jockey Club. The garden was created in 1808 by order of the Portuguese prince Dom João VI as a temporary site for acclimatizing exotic plant species from all over the world broth there by the Portuguese. In the premises we will visit Brazil’s first gunpowder factory at the Casa dos Piloes Archaeology Museum.
During the walk we will also be able to see the majestic imperial palm trees and the orchid and Bromeliad greenhouses.
Rio’s Botanical Garden is also one of the best spots to observe the city wildlife, such as capuchin and marmosets monkeys, toucans, red throated guan and several other animal species.
To wrap the day we’ll visit the Tijuca National Park for a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of one of the local waterfalls surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Floresta da Tijuca.
