Stop At: Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica, Viale Dei Romagnoli 717, 00119 Ostia Antica Italy

Your tour starts at a meeting location in Rome, where you’ll meet your guide, who provides your round-trip train ticket. Then hop aboard the train for the ride southwest of Rome to Ostia Antica, which lies near the coast.

When you arrive, take a 2.5-hour leisurely walking tour through the ancient ruins, noting their highly preserved state for which this archaeological site is so renowned. Dating as far back as the 4th century BC, the ruins include structures like an amphitheater, the Forum of the Corporations, the Collegiate Temple, taverns and public baths. Once home to more than 100,000 people, Ostia was the port city of Ancient Rome.

Walk along the main road, Decumanus Maximus, while your guide tells you stories about life in town. Admire the intact Roman statues that line the walkways; pass by the Baths of Neptune, crowned by a mosaic that depicts the Roman god of the sea behind a 4-hourse chariot; and take a seat in the amphitheater, which dates back to 12 BC and was built to hold 3,500 spectators. Shops and apartments make up some of the smaller buildings. When your time at the site is up, you’ll return to Rome by train.

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

The tour guide Andrea was very knowledgeable and the tour was a great experience. Loved that you got all of the history and then could stay to explore if you wanted.

Ostia Antica is a must see while visiting Roma. Everything is so well preserved and the history is fascinating. The original mosaics are beautiful and the fact that you're able to walk through the ancient buildings is incredible. Our tour guide Rebecca was the best (if you're reading this thank you again). We preferred this tour to the Pompeii tour, so if you're not sure if you have time for Ostia, I would suggest making the time.

We have been to Rome several times, but have never visited Ostia before. Tours sourced through Viator never disappoint. But this tour was exceptional. The ruins are magnificent at this site. But the reason we enjoyed this excursion as much as we did was our guide. Rebecca filled the morning with so much information about life in the ancient city. Beyond that, she offered tips on navigating our way through the transportation systems in the city. Rebecca actually learned the names and home cities of all the tour members and then pointed out connections or things that she thought would be especially meaningful based on all that she learned about us on the train ride to the site. Rebecca clearly loves what she does and she made the trip delightful for us.

My group of 4 joined a couple others for an enlightening tour of Ostia Antica. The guide answered all of our questions and had a very good presentation.

My mother and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Ostia was a welcome escape from the chaotic bustle of Rome, and because it’s a relatively unspoiled site we were able to get up close and personal to a well preserved Roman town. Above all our guide, Rebecca, was so helpful and knowledgeable; she went above and beyond to make the tour worthwhile.

We booked this tour, which is done by City Wonders. It was awesome to see Ostia Antica, which isn't too busy or "touristy". It is a vast sight with lots to see. Our guide, Rob, was amazing and we believe it made the visit a lot better because we could better understand what we were looking at, and because he made his explanations interesting and funny.

This a Not to Miss part of Rome - tour guide was Angela who had a great knowledge of the site and history in general. Easy train trip to Ostia and enjoyable walk around the main parts far better than Pompeii Less tourists and better preserved ruins - then left to get the train back to Pyramid Station which was good so you could spend has much time after the tour walking around this wonderful site. Our tour lady kindly gave a fellow tour person 10 euro after he found he had been pickpocket at Rome train station and left with no wallet which was such a generous thing to do. Suggest when you get back to Pyramid station go across the road and visit the Non Cathoic Cemetery where Keats is buried

Think we were in same group as Teoman D, if so, we would repeat the same comments and compliments! Asha our tour guide really made the difference with her vast knowledge, personality, wit, humor, and organization. She took the time to meet every member of the group individually (on the train ride) to get to know us. We took other tours with good tour guides but Asha definitely stands out on her own. Grazie mille Asha!

First of all compliments to the company. There was a train and bus drivers strike and in stead of cancelling the tour they made alternative plans to let the tour continue. Ostia was fascinating and I would recommend this tour to anybody but most of all to anybody with and interest in Roman history
