About this activity
We will pick up you at your hotel or any other place of your convenience and transfer you to Ostia Antica (about 40 minutes from Rome).
There you will enjoy a private walking tour through the archaeological site with one of our official archaeology expertised guides who will interpret the ruins of this Ancient Roman port.
Ancient Ostia offers the opportunity to walk along the streets of an ancient city of Roman period, quite similar to Pompeii but much more closer and more easily accesible from Rome.
Ostia was once a city of 50,000 people. The city boasted a complex infrastructure of warehouses, bakeries, markets, shops, restaurants, taverns, as well as elaborate public spaces and facilities, including a forum, theatre, temples, and beautiful bathing complexes.
Here it’s easy to let your imagination fly and feel like you’ve been transported back in time, Ostia, is now one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. With your guide you’ll learn about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of Ostia, their good and bad habits, discuss the architecture of the houses of both the rich and more common citizens of Ostia.
Some of the highlights you will see during this tour are the Terme di Nettuno where you can admire the beautiful black and white mosaics representing Neptune and Amphitrite, the Decumanus Maximus, the main thoroughfare that crosses the city from north east to south west, the theatre built by Agrippa anf the Forum which formed the centre of the city.
Here you will discover the principle public buildings, The Capitolium and the Temple of Rome and Augustus, the Basilica and the large thermal baths.
On the way back to Rome, we will pass by the E.U.R. quarter, or “Esposizione Universale Di Roma,” built by Mussolini before World War II with imperial architecture style.
