About this activity
The very theatrical and extravagant Baroque art of the 17th century was born in Rome. The historic center of the city is full of masterpieces of this cultural movement born in Rome during the 17°century, thanks to the Roman Catholic Church that encouraged this style. The first stop of our Tour will be Piazza del Popolo, a large urban square; the name means “People’s Square”. The layout of the piazza was designed in neoclassical style by the architect Giuseppe Valadier. An egyptian obelisk stands in the center of the Piazza. Going on with the tour you can’t miss Spanish Steps with its steps of Trinità dei Monti and the church at their top. An amazing place for a romantic walk, this square is usually chosen as the set of famous fashion shows. In spring and summer the scalinata – the widest and most famous staircase in Europe – reaches its peak when completely adorned with flowers. In the middle of the suare oyu can admire the Early Baroque fountain called Fontana della Barcaccia standing at the base of scalinata. Next you will see the very famous Trevi Fountain. Its magic has been celebrated in the most famous italian movies, such as Fellini’s La dolce vita, when at night a beautiful Anita Ekberg calls for his gentlemen Marcello Mastroianni from the fountain. Don’t forget to throw a coin inside the fountain … they say that your desires will become true or you could return in Rome. The Pantheon is your next stop, the building commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, was a temple dedicated to all the divinities of Ancient Rome. Later you could move toward Piazza Navona (Navona Square) and its splendid Fountain of the Four Rivers of Bernini and the Church of Saint Agnese, where you will see magnificent sculptures. The square was built in the 1st century A.D. and is known for its particular shape in fact it was designed as an ancient stadium.
