Baths of Caracalla guided tour
Visit the Baths of Caracalla and admire one of the finest imperial baths of ancient Rome, built by Emperor Caracalla on Aventine hill between 212 A.C. and 217 A.C. During the tour, you will stop at the Mouth of Truth, which is able to detect a liar, according to a legend.
A few minutes away from the Colosseum, the Baths of Caracalla represent one of the best-preserved examples of imperial spa complex of ancient Rome; it was constructed under the auspices of the Emperor Caracalla between 212 and 217 A.C. and remained in use until the 6th century, when Rome was besieged during the Gothic war.
The Baths of Caracalla were the most sumptuous and the largest of Rome, only after the Baths of Diocletian. The spa itself was a place for bathing and relaxing, study, sport and health. Restored several times, the thermal complex ceased to operate in 537 A.C.
From the Baths, strolling in front of Circus Maximus, your guide will take you to the Aventine hill, where you will enjoy the most famous view of St. Peter’s Dome, stunningly framed by the manicured trees inside the garden just beyond the door.
