Stop At: Via della Conciliazione, Rome Italy
On March 14, 1888, in the presence of the royals, was placed the first stone of the Palace of Justice designed by the architect Calderini, who was inspired by the neo-Baroque architecture. It is nicknamed "Palazzaccio " for his appearance and function. In 1970 the Palazzaccio threatened to collapse and was temporarily abandoned. After a long restoration today he returned to host the Supreme Court of Cassation, the seat for which it had been built.
Emperor Hadrian built Castel S. Angelo in 135 A.D. on the "Horti Domiziani" area to serve as an imperial tomb for himself and his successors. The mausoleum, work of the architect Demetriano, was terminated, after the death of Hadrian, in 139 under Antoninus Pius. To communicate the tomb with Campo Marzio was built a new bridge, the "Ponte Elio" (Today S. Angelo Bridge) which was inaugurated in 134 A.D.
It ideally connects the capital of Italy with the Vatican state, according to a director who develops from Castel Sant'Angelo to Piazza San Pietro; The road flows into Piazza Pio XII, where a thin line of Roman travertine outlines the state boundary with the Vatican City, framing scenographically the Petrina Basilica. It is one of the most discussed and bitterly criticized Urbanistic works of the twentieth century
Duration: 3 hours
Pass By: St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza di San Pietro, 00120 Vatican City Italy
The grandeur of the seventeenth century façade of Carlo Maderno makes the idea of the colossal dimensions of the Basilica of St. Peter, still one of the largest churches in the world. The dome designed by Michelangelo surprises in size and harmony, features that you appreciate in the challenging but rewarding ascent that allows you to admire both the inside and the outside.
Among the many masterpieces, absolutely not to miss the Pietà of Michelangelo, the work that amazes for centuries for technique and emotionality.
