Stop At: Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo, 00184 Rome Italy

Feel the glory and majesty of Rome at the height of its power as you walk on the very same stones as those who came to fight here in gladiatorial combat, treading in their footsteps out onto a partial reconstruction of the arena floor, looking up at the tiered ruins that were once filled with some 50,000-80,000 bloodthirsty spectators.

You are sure to hear their echoes as your eyes are drawn upward, your body turns and your mind is boggled by the elegance and engineering prowess of what was once the largest structure of its kind in the world, all from this unique 360° view, as a local expert guide reminds you of its dramatic purpose in a narrative that goes beyond anything Hollywood could dream up.

Home to the gladiatorial games, exotic staged hunts, theatrical executions and even mock sea-battles, this 1.5-hour Colosseum tour explores the Arena Floor with its awe-inspiring perspective, up-close views of the underground area where the spectacle was brought to life, and the panorama from where the Emperor’s box once stood, all special access areas that standard ticket holders don’t get to see.

In addition, you will follow your guide up to the second level to see what the crowds saw, tracing the Colosseum’s circumference in an effort to understand what it must have been like when the stands were packed, the crowds were roaring and a gladiator’s destiny hung on their whims.

No other itinerary allows you to see the Colosseum from the two most impressive above and below viewpoints in such a compact time frame.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Pass By: Roman Forum, Piazza Santa Maria Nova, 53, 00186 Rome Italy

After the tour you will also have the option of staying inside the Colosseum to continue your exploration, or follow your guide for Skip the Line access to the Roman Forum at no additional cost. Here you will be taken to the best vantage point for a short introduction into its history and most famous monuments before visiting them on your own, enriched by your guide’s expert knowledge. You will also be able to hike to the top of the Palatine Hill for an exceptional bird’s-eye perspective over the Forum and Circus Maximus.

The Colosseum has fascinated visitors throughout history, evoking images of fierce gladiators, roaring crowds, as well as wild lions and tigers springing from their cages. For the first time you can now access this awe-inspiring edifice's Arena Floor directly for a truly indelible imprint of the wonder that was ancient Rome.

This was the 4th booking I've made via Viator - all really good so far. However, my initial impression of the company running this tour was not favourable. The process of checking in was beyond chaotic. The tour guide was good but it was very scripted, no effort made to properly engage with different age groups within the group - our daughter (9) who is history mad was bored stiff and I think that sums it up particularly in such a spectacular venue. However, I appreciated the skip the line aspects and I think it was beneficial to have a tour , even little things like where to take the best photos are good as of course is the knowledge provided by the tour guide

A great hour and a half with Inga. Tour moved well through the crowds, walking through the Gate of Life was thrilling. Plenty of information and saw everything we wanted to see.

We knew we wanted to visit the Colosseum, but in our group there was different interests in sight-seeing times. This tour was the perfect amount of time for everyone. The meeting directions were easy to follow. Arena floor with privileged access was definitely the way to go. We walked to a different entrance and waited maybe 5 minutes before we were escorted to the arena floor. Time is limited on the arena floor, but it was neat to see. Our guide was Alessandro. He was great. You could tell he loved what he was doing and Roman history. After the tour was complete of the Colosseum, we were escorted over to the Roman Forum for the skip the line entrance and a brief explanation of a few sites. Then we were off on our own to explore with recommendations of things to see. We really enjoyed this tour option and our guide.

We visited in peak season, and were very glad we had pre-booked this tour as the queues outside were very long in the hot sun. Going through the gladiators entrance is definitely the way to enter very impressive when you walk on to the arena floor. We got about 10/15 mins on the arena floor until you have to move on to let other groups on, but still plenty of time to take pictures. Our guide Daniella was excellent, really knowledgable and told us facts that we didn't already know. We even got to skip the line and go straight through to the entrance at Palatino hill and the Forum where Daniella gave a brief talk about which routes you could take when walking round.

Really enjoyed this tour as you get access to the Arena floor nice and early in the morning, so was not too busy, and a good tour with comprehensive info around the rest of the Colosseum.

This tour was fantastic! We've done the full Colosseum Tour in the past and this time wanted a shorter version while traveling with friends who'd never been. Seeing the Colosseum from the Gladiator Entrance and Arena Floor gave a totally different and amazing! perspective! This tour offers 1.5 hours in the Colosseum and another 30 mins inside the Roman Forum. It was the perfect amount of time. Our guide Maria Louisa was exceptionally knowledgeable and kept everyone engaged. The group was small which made it easy to maneuver around the crowds. Highly recommmend!

The tour itself was great. The guide was great. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The check in process was a little unorganized as there were about 3 tours starting at the same time. I had to ask a few times before I was given clear directions as to where to go.
