Stop At: Obelisco del Foro Italico, Piazza Lauro de Bosis Viale del Foro Italico, 00135 Rome Italy
Modern-day Rome still has numerous reminders of the fascist movement that came to power in 1922. Led by Mussolini, the fascists wanted to renovate Italy’s capital city, developing a new infrastructure and building new monuments that were to symbolise the might of the new regime.
The goal of the new dictator was to create a Third Rome to rival that of Caesar’s Rome and the Rome of the Popes. Mussolini saw the 1920’s as his time, and on this unique tour we visit some of the most interesting building and other structures which came to be powerful symbols of the fascist regime.
On this tour we travel back in time to the twenty years that helped to shape the Italy of today; from the rise of fascism to its defeat in WWII. The itinerary begins in Piazza Venezia where Mussolini had his headquarters and takes in the innovative EUR district and the sports centre with the famous obelisk that bears his name.
As we follow in Mussolini’s footsteps through Rome’s historic sites we will find the answers to many questions raised about him: who was he, who were his followers, what did he do for his country and why is he still today a much talked about and controversial figure.
If you want to know more about Italy’s history, this is the perfect tour for you!
