About this activity
Meet your expert guide at 9am in front of the tourist information center. Your guide will escort you inside the Colosseum while discussing its origins, speedy construction and a selection of accounts from literature describing the daily carnage. Who ran the shows? How many people died there? Was it really flooded for mock naval battles? All these questions and many more will be answered as you look out across the iconic structure.
An explanation of the Colossus of Nero and Arch of Constantine in the Valley of the Colosseum is given before a tour of the ancient Roman Forum and Capitoline Hill, which includes all the main basilicas and temples in the area as well as sites where criminals and enemies of the state were thrown to their deaths from the foreboding Tarpeian Rock, and in other cases, the Gemonian Stairs.
Walk into the centro storico with breaks on Piazza Navona, beside the Trevi Fountain, and in front of the ancient Pantheon, during which your guide will relate the fascinating story of Rome's Field of Mars.
In the afternoon you will enter the Vatican Museums and see the Belvedere Courtyard, Room of the Muses, Round Room, Greek Cross Room, Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms and Sistine Chapel, then St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square.
Your comprehensive full-day tour of Rome concludes at St. Peter's Square at approximately 4pm.
