About this activity
Walk with us through two of the most representative and rich-of-history neighborhoods of Rome: the Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere — likely the most authentic “Italian” neighborhood in the city. You will learn the overall history of Europe's longest surviving Jewish community, dating back to the 3rd century BC. The neighborhood's specific Jewish-Roman tradition is what makes the “Ghetto” a truly enchanting and unique place. Once inside the Ghetto, you will be charmed by its attractive shops, cafes, stores and kosher restaurants. We will stop by and admire the monumental Synagogue (from the outside only) and continue to the fascinating Portico of Octavia, and the Grand Theater of Marcellus where the guide discusses and revives the ancient and medieval life of both Jewish and Christians along the Tiber river. We then walk over to the only island in the city, Isola Tiberina. Here our guides will discuss the importance of the island, the history of the river and a few noteworthy monuments in its vicinity including the Fabricio Bridge, the remains of the Ponte Rotto. In Trastevere, you will be able to take in the cultural scene of this popular neighborhood with its quaint Piazzas, Roman fountains and its famous beautiful hand-painted church, Santa Maria in Trastevere. Finally, the tour ends with a recommendation to a specially selected restaurant for the members of the tour.
