About this activity
Visit: Sistine Chapel, Citta del Vaticano 1, 00120 Vatican City Italy
The Sistine Chapel is one of the most important treasures of the Vatican, of Rome and of the world. It is famous for its frescoes but also because it is where the Popes are elected. What most attracts attention in the Sistine Chapel, however, is not its architecture, but the frescoes that completely decorate its walls and ceiling. Renowned artists such as Botticelli, Perugino and Michelangelo contributed to the wide decoration of the Chapel.
Visit: Vatican Museums, Viale Vaticano, 00120 Vatican City Italy
In the rooms of the Vatican Museums, the works of painting and sculpture are arranged, as well as many other works of human genius, collected over the centuries by the Supreme Pontiffs. The museums also include outstanding artistic monuments, such as the Sistine Chapel, the Chapel of Beato Angelico, the Rooms and the Loggia of Raphael and the Borgia Apartment.

We missed the window for picking up our tickets because driving and parking around the Vatican is particularly tricky one way streets. We had no plan b, so we hired another company for skip the line tickets. The tour through the Vatican was nightmarish. It took 2 hours to get in, even though we had skip the line tickets. It was swarmed with people and we kept getting trapped behind clogged hallways of looky-loos for miles. We all wished we would have skipped this overwhelming and underwhelming drama.
After seeing the line for the Vatican Museum, this is totally worth it just for the time savings.
I'm rating this tour a 2 out of 5 not because of the tour itself, but primarily the attraction itself. The Vatican Museum is filled with pieces upon pieces upon pieces all with pretty much the exact same recurring images- those of Christ, Mary and angels. We spent about 2 hrs going through the museum but it got quite, and I hate to use this word, boring very quickly. The only real high light for me was seeing the roof of the Sistine Chapel having studied Michaelangelo in school. Overall though I regret dedicating almost half a day to this tour between getting there and coming back. Bear in mind there is no guiding at all in this which is important to remember. If you plan on visiting the museum, definitely come with a tour guide so you can information. I purchased the audible tour guide at the front desk for 5 euros, but every number of art you press has a musical introduction of about a minute until it gets to the information. After the first few times of listening to some pieces I neglected the guide altogether. In conclusion, if you are interested in the museum and wish to really learn something- this is not the tour for you and you need to come with a guided tour- do not rely on the audible guides. But if you are interested in just strolling through the museum while getting no information- this is really good as you get to skip the long lines. Another important thing which I did not realise until I was at the museum itself- St Peter's Square is a good 15 minute drive from the museum. I think it cost about 10 euros to get there which is inexpensive but still important to know.
We met our guide at the pre-tour meeting point. Easy enough to find by taxi or Metro Stop. The meeting point was extremely unsanitary, and many hawkers trying to sell water, selfie sticks, trinkets. (with a firm NO, they walk away.) The guides walk fast! Wife disabled so we were always last.
