It is bordered on the north by the cities of Naples and Pozzuoli, on the east by Mount Vesuvius, and on the south by the Sorrentine Peninsula and the main town of the peninsula, Sorrento. Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years.
