Your tour in the Vatican Museums will start from one of the special off-limits area, which can be visited only with a special permit of access, of the Vatican Museums: the Bramante Staircase. This is a double helix Bramante staircase that was built to permit Pope Julius II to enter directly with his carriage into his apartments.

Then, you will proceed to very important rooms, starting from the Octagonal Courtyard, where you will be able to admire the Apollo of Belvedere and the Laocoon marble group. Then, you will move to the Room of the Animals and the Room of the Muses. In the first one, beautiful statues recreate a marble zoo; in the second one, you will see the statue of Apollo playing a Lira and the Torso in the center. Finally, you will arrive in the Round Room, where you will see Nero’s bathtub, encircled by many important huge Roman statues.

After, you will arrive in the rooms that a young Raphael painted under the commission of Pope Julius II. Among the many paintings that fill the room, you will admire the “School of Athens”, that Raphael painted while Michelangelo was working on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. In his work, Raphael also represented himself in the “School of Athens”, together with some of his contemporaries, such as Bramante and Michelangelo. The two paintings Dispute over the Sacrament and the Parnassus are conserved in these rooms too.

The Dominican Monk Fra Angelico painted this very small chapel in 1448 for the Pope Nicholas V and it is now considered one of the artistic treasures of the early Renaissance. Here, the scenes of St. Steven’s and St. Lawrence’s lives are depicted with the use of brilliant colors.
