About this activity
Leave your Rome hotel or the airport in the early morning to beat the city traffic, and travel out of the capital with your private guide.
After an hour on the road, you’ll arrive in the Subacio area, home to the Monastery of St. Benedict. Stroll through the woods as your guide talks about the saint and time he spent in Subacio. The monastery here was built to house the Sacro Speco, the cave where St Benedict lived as a hermit for around three years.
Step inside the sacred cave to pray, and then visit the church, which is adorned with an impressive fresco of St. Francis of Assisi. It was painted during the saint’s lifetime.
Leave Subacio in the late morning, and travel across the foothills to Montecassino. Enjoy lunch at your own expense, then visit the Abbey of Montecassino where St. Benedict lived out his remaining years. It’s here that he wrote his “rule,” a set of guidelines for laymen who wanted to live a more spiritual life. These guidelines formed the basis for monastic rules through medieval Europe.
Learn about the abbey’s wartime history, when it was bombed heavily by Allied troops, and discover how it was rebuilt from its original plans. Today, the site is a working abbey and continues to be place of pilgrimage and historical interest.
Return to your minivan in the mid-afternoon, and relax on your journey back to Rome.
