This is a definite must. However, it is something that you can do on your own if you want to which is why I gave it only 4 stars. The Thermal Wonderland is an absolute must see if you are in this area of New Zealand. Beautiful in it's own majesty. It just require driving to the parks if you don't want to take the tour and relax. This was a way for my husband, who had done all of the driving, to sit back and relax. The Lady Knox geyser is nothing really to look at. It is induced with soap and, as such, it is not truly erupting in its natural environment. Plus, if you don't get there really early before each eruption you will find it very difficult to even see. I thought this part of the tour was more than a waste of time. All in all, our tour guide was great and was very knowledgeable about the entire area. I enjoyed his commentary.

This was a fabulous half day tour. Even though I’m not a huge lord of the rings fan this was interesting and so pretty!

Very cool park to see! Lots of cool views and interesting and diverse geothermal stuff. I opted for Hobbiton in the afternoon and that was awesome as well. Great way to split the day between two different sites without having to hassle with getting to and from everything. So convenient that the shuttle drivers take you wherever you need to go.

WOW! What a day! I'd say it was the very best day I've spent in New Zealand so far. I had two guides one for my morning and one for my afternoon tour and they were both very different in their approach but excellent guides. Lady Knox Geysir didn't impress me because I went to Iceland two years ago and I observed a real Geysir eruption, not a man-made by soap. The rest of Wai-O-Tapu is so worth checking out. My highlights were Champagne Pool and Devil's Pool. I could easily have spent the whole day there but I booked a Hobbiton tour for the afternoon. If you are into geothermal activity as I am, I recommend you to stay the whole day at Wai-O-Tapu and don't book anything for the afternoon because otherwise you only get to spend two hours at Wai-O-Tapu. The Hobbiton movie set tour was incredible! We had a very enthusiastic fan as a guide and nobody knew the place better than him. I haven't seen all the Lord of The Rings and Hobbit movies but the movie set tour is still worth it! We got a free drink at The Green Dragon and it made our day.

Wonderful day trip. We did both Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu. Even though they are close by each other - they are very different experiences. The info that they give you at the park entrances really describe the sites - we did not miss the tour guide experience. Highly recommended.
