About this activity
This tour operates as a small group tour: which allows for a more personal and flexible, enjoyable day rather than large coach tours!
In the morning we visit Wia-o-tapu a geothermal wonderland to experience volcanic activity, thousands of years in the making.
Lady Knox Geyser provides a unique opportunity to see an eruption to heights of 10 to 20 metres, in a natural amphitheatre, with full guided commentary on both the geyser and the history of the area.
Wai-O-Tapu is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction. You are introduced to a uniquely different natural landscape – the key to what you see lies below the surface – one of the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand. Clearly defined tracks provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of this area through a series of different walks, taking from 30 to 75 minutes. Each with their own unique volcanic vistas to fascinate all ages. The nature of the reserve being an active volcanic area with undulating terrain. A photographers dream.
See the largest mud pool in New Zealand, it was originally the site of a large mud volcano which was destroyed through erosion in the 1920’s.
In the afternoon we make our way to Te Puia. Explore Te Whakarewarewa, a 60 hectare Geothermal Valley, showcasing the famous Rotorua mud pools and over 500 geothermal wonders, including the Pohutu Geyser, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest active geyser!
A Kiwi House & Viewing Enclosure featuring two iconic native New Zealand kiwi birds.
Traditional Māori Carving and Weaving performed before your eyes, including wood, stone & bone carvings as well flax-weaving- Te Puia is home to the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute.
Māori Art & History at Te Heketanga a Rangi, the entrance to Te Puia with 12 monumental carvings that represent celestial Māori guardians. Hear ancestral stories of the Māori settlement in Rotorua and about culture.
A model Pre-European Maori Village and sacred Marae giving you a rare glimpse into how Māori people lived prior to European settlement, and our two Marae’s or sacred meeting houses.
There is the opportunity to enjoy lunch, a little souvenir shopping and free time at both venues.
You will be returned back to your Hotel/Accommodation after your tour.
