Stop At: Yusupov Palace on Moika River, Emb. Reki Moiki, 94 Entrance for individual visitors and small groups from Dekabristov Street, 21, St. Petersburg 190000 Russia

Built around 1770 by the French architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe, the

Yusupov Palace would be worked on as well, by many other well-known architects over the years, creating a mix of architectural styles. The extraordinary wealth of the Yusupovs garnered them four palaces in St. Petersburg, but they preferred this location to the others. More than 40,000 works of art – including works by Rembrandt – jewellery, and sculptures are kept here. Particularly inspirational are the exquisite patterns decorating the Moorish Room with delicate columns, golden gates, and bold colors. But perhaps Rasputin’s ghost gives this palace its character, as the murder of the infamous political figure happened here in 1916.

Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

Stop At: State Russian Museum, Inzhenernaya St., 4 Metro: Gostiny Dvor, Nevskiy Prospekt, St. Petersburg 191011 Russia

State Russian Museum contains everything from priceless religious icons to works by avant-garde artists. The museum collection embraces all forms, genres, schools and movements of art. Many pieces are exquisite gifts presented to czars and represent Russia’s many ethnicities. Among the first displays of the collection were famous paintings. They included "The Ninth Wave" by Romantic painter Ivan Aivazovsky and "The Last Day of Pompeii" by Karl Bryullov. After the Russian Museum created a section for new artistic trends in 1926 the museum began collecting contemporary artworks, from Symbolism to the Russian avant-garde. Besides Malevich and Filonov, the contemporary section includes masterpieces by well-known artists such as Kandinsky and Chagall, as well as acclaimed figures such as painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. The Russian Museum continues to acquire new pieces, with its collection today numbering more than 400,000 works.
