Stop At: St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Northwestern District
Your tour guide will pick you up at your St.Petersburg centrally located hotel and you will walk towards the nearest metro station to explore St.Petersburg underground first, as well as the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Lavra afterwards - home to some of the oldest buildings in the city, as well as to cemeteries which contain the graves of some of the giants of Russian culture, including Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky, and Glinka.
Whereas most European city metros are dark, gloomy and have little to write home about, the same can’t be said in St Petersburg, where stations were designed as palaces for the people. As you walk through the underground tunnels, learn about the Soviet Union in its heyday and marvel at the artwork and architecture that epitomized the regime’s power and prosperity. Travel by metro to Ploshchad Vosstaniya at Uprising Square and admire its incredible bas-relief carvings (sculptures carved on a flat surface) of revolutionary events featuring leaders like Lenin and Stalin. Visit Avtovo, the station that many consider an underground palace with its marble columns, gold mosaics and sculptures of soldiers carved into a palatial entranceway. See more intriguing bas-reliefs at Kirovskiy Zavod, a station named after the nearby Kirov industrial plant, and then continue to Admiralteyskaya – one of the deepest underground stations in the world at a depth of 282 feet (86 meters).
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Holy Trinity Alexander Nevskiy Lavra, Reki Monastyrki Emb., 1, St. Petersburg 191167 Russia
Then come to Alexander Nevsky metro station to find yourself right in front of Alexander Nevsky Lavra, founded by Peter the Great in 1710, this orthodox monastery is the most important in St. Petersburg, located at the eastern end of Nevsky Prospekt. It is the first and the largest monastery of the city. For many visitors, one of the major attractions is the monastery's graveyards, home to the final resting places of many of the great names of Russian culture. The Tikhvin Cemetery contains many of the most famous graves: In the far right-hand corner from the gate is an impressive bust of Tchaikovsky over his grave, while close by are Rubinshtein, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Glinka. Dostoevsky lies further back along the wall, towards the gate. The other main cemetery, the Lazarus Cemetery, is the resting place of several of the great architects who left their indelible mark on the city, including Starov, Quarenghi and Rossi.
Your guided tour finishes in Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The rest of the day is free for you.
