These are some of the numbers that make the Certosa di Padula, the largest in Italy. Dedicated to San Lorenzo, It was founded in 1306 by Thomas Sanseverino, who gave the order of the Carthusians. The main part is baroque and tells over 450 of history, with millions of people who trampled its entry. Today the Certosa houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Western Lucania, with a collection of finds from the excavations of the necropolis of Sala Consilina and Padula.

The early Christian baptistery [4th century AD] is one of the oldest in western Europe. It was commissioned by Pope Marcellus I from whom the church and the town of Marcellanium, destroyed in the 6th century AD perhaps during the Gothic-Greek war, take their name. The church was rebuilt in the 12th century and is now dedicated to St John the Baptist. Restoration work carried out in 1985-1987 brought to light a structure arranged around a square building and walls, with round arches, which would probably have supported a dome. At the centre, the baptismal font could count on a supply of water from a spring that never ran dry and a basin full of water. There are clear signs of the re-use of Roman materials taken from an imperial villa while the frescoes date back to the foundation – 6th-7th century AD – and to the 9th century AD.

Visit: Joe Petrosino Museum, Italy

The museum set up in the home town of the Italo-American policeman Giuseppe “Joe” Petrosino [born in Padula on 30 August 1860] is the only house museum dedicated to a representative of the forces of law and order. After returning to Italy from New York - where
he had emigrated with his parents at the age of 13 – to investigate the links between the American and Sicilian mafia, Joe returned to Padula before moving on to Palermo where he was assassinated on 12 March 1909.

The Multimedia civic museum [Museo Civico Multimediale], housed in Palazzo Brando, near the town council building, was set up in 2014, based on the design of Fabrizio Mangoni. It provides an interactive, rigorous and evocative museum experience through the thousand-year history of Padula and Vallo di Diano, from prehistory to the nineteenth century.
