Copper Mine Overlook and Great Salt Lake Tour

4h30
About this activity
The sightseeing tour bus will pick you up downtown in Salt Lake City and then travel 20 miles to the Great Salt Lake. The tour is fully narrated by a professional guide. The bus is air-conditioned and has large panoramic windows. Sights along the way include the beautiful Rocky Mountains amidst a desert landscape, a migratory bird refuge, and islands of the lake visible in the distance.

At the south shore of the Great Salt Lake you will see the remains of an historic beach resort, Saltair, and be entertained by your guide with stories from long ago. Next travel a few miles to the marina where you will have the opportunity to experience the Great Salt Lake. Swimming is optional but if you do, sinking in the water is impossible. This lake is so salty you simply cannot sink! An observation deck offers beautiful views and photo opportunities. A visitor center includes a small museum and gift shop.

After visiting Great Salt Lake, you will board a smaller minibus or van and travel 30 miles to the mountaintop overlook above the copper mine. Most of the travel is on paved roads, though the final few miles will be on bumpy dirt roads that do not have guard rails. The drive is filled with beautiful mountain scenery and the occasional wildlife sighting. Once atop the mountain you will experience the sights of the overlook at 9,000 ft in elevation. A 360 degree view of northern Utah is breathtaking, with nearly 80% of Utah's population visible on a clear day. Deep in the copper mine below, view over 500 miles of dirt roads spiraling to the bottom. Witness the operations of this active mine from a distance. The views are spectacular, but please be aware that no access is possible inside the pit. Binoculars are highly recommended. Your guide will fully narrate, explaining all of the fun facts, figures, and stories of the richest copper mine in history.

*If you are fearful of mountain driving then this tour may be too adventurous for you. Approximately 20-30 minutes of travel is on bumpy dirt roads without guardrails as you climb from 4000 ft to 9000 ft in elevation. The Great Salt Lake portion of the tour is conducted in a small touring bus, while the copper mine mountain overlook portion will be in a 14-passenger van.

**This tour does not go inside the open pit mine, it is not open to the public. You will view the operations of the mine from a distance, so binoculars are recommended.

Hotel pickup/drop-off is available for downtown Salt Lake City hotels, and free parking is available. Free parking is available. Pickups will begin 10-30 minutes prior to the tour.
