Stop At: Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Mirabellplatz 4, Salzburg 5020 Austria
We will start our tour here where the famous Do Re Mi scene was filmed where the Pegasus Fountain, the Hermes statues, the Dwarf statues, the ivy laden archways and the famous steps are that Maria and the children sang upon!

Stop At: Villa Trapp, Traunstraße 34, 5026 Salzburg, Austria
After leaving Mirabell gardens, we will pick up the E-bikes (which will cost 25 euro/person that you will pay directly to the bike store).
Then we will go to the original Family Von Trapp house, which the Captain and his 7 children moved into in 1924 from their previous home in Vienna after his wife died. A few years later, Maria moved in with Georg and his children to tutor one of his daughters (also named Maria) who was recovering from Scarlet Fever, and later they became married in 1927 in the Nonnberg Abbey (which we will visit) until they moved out in 1938 to escape to Italy and then to the U.S. at the onset of the war. SS officer Himmler took over this house during the war for his own personal house and after the war, a Catholic order bought it from the Trapp family as a house for their priests to live in. They still own the house, but since 2009, this Catholic order has turned it into a guest house, where you can stay if you like while visiting Salzburg! The Villa Trapp charges 8 euro/person to tour the house and gardens, along with Himmler's bunker. There are a lot of photos on the walls and other memorabilia from when the family lived there. It is truly fascinating for any fan of the Sound of Music and the Trapp Family singers.

Stop At: Schloss Hellbrunn, Fuerstenweg 37, Salzburg 5020 Austria
We will next ride our bikes about 20 minutes through some lovely upscale neighborhoods of Salzburg through the Aigen area, through a beautiful park by an old mansion of a Duke and a lovely old monestary, and then by the Salzach River and by horse pastures to the amazing Hellbrunn Palace and Gardens. We will spend about 30 minutes there walking around the palace,gardens, and ponds, which is much longer than what the other tour groups do! Of course included in this will be the highlight, where we will see the real Pavillion that was given to the city which 20th Century Fox placed in the Garden near the terrace by the pond behind the house used in the film. So this pavillion stood for years by that pond in the garden by the Palace Leopoldskron, which we will visit later in the tour.

Stop At: Schloss Frohnburg, Hellbrunner Allee 53, 5020 Salzburg, Austria
After leaving the Hellbrunn Palace, we will ride our bikes just 5 minutes down a lovely breathtaking dirt Allee lined by old oak trees used only for horses, bikes and pedestrians through the horse pastures and fields and will stop at the actual house that was used to film the outside of the Family Von Trapp house scenes. This is where the Captain ripped down the Nazi flag hung on his house during his honeymoon and where the family tried to quietly escape by pushing their car until the Nazis stopped them just outside their gate. Also, this Allee is where Julie Andrews skips with her guitar down to the gate of the house while singing "I have confidence". All the indoor scenes of the house were filmed on set in Hollywood.

Stop At: Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron, Leopoldskronstraße 56-58, 5020 Salzburg, Austria
After leaving the previous stop at the Frohnburg Palace (the Von Trapp house in the film), we will continue to bike down the natural Hellbrunner Allee, through the beautiful fields and by more huge mansions and palaces. We will stop for 10 minutes at a palace that is now featuring a nice restaurant and an Austrian Dirndl/traditional dress company where you can see some of the finest traditional clothes made in the Alpen region on display in their showroom! We can stop there for an iced mint tea or cool drink sitting outside on the terrace gazing at the high mountains shown in the film in the distance if you wish. Then we will continue on bike paths through more lovely fields and meadows and pass even by a cow milking farm where you can even buy fresh milk if you like! Then we will go through some lovely neighborhoods and arrive at Schloss Leopoldskron! These are some of the loveliest parts on the journey through the more natural greener areas of South Salzburg. We will then see the back terrace and pond of the palace Leopoldskron, which is where all the terrace scenes were filmed behind the Trapp family house. So this is actually the second location that was used to film the outdoor scenes around the house. This palace itself was not shown in the film, but of course, the gardens, terrace and lake were featured and this is where the gazebo was located until it was moved to Palace Hellbrunn many years later after the film was made, so everyone could see it more easily. The Leopoldskron palace is a private hotel now used for conferences and economic forums, which is run by Harvard University. It was the original home of the famous writer Max Reinhardt, founder of the Salzburg Summer Classical Music Festival, which is the same festival that the Von Trapp family sang at in the film and in real life!

Stop At: Nonnberg Convent, Nonnberggasse 2, Salzburg 5020 Austria
After stopping at the Leopoldskron Palace, we will ride our bikes through more green areas and lovely old residential areas of Salzburg just 15 minutes or so towards the main Fortress of Salzburg as we head to the city center. Before we get to the city center, we will ride to the flank of the fortress to visit the Nonnberg Abbey, which is where several scenes were filmed such as when the children rang the bell to visit Fraulein Maria when she was there after leaving the house party in guilt. Also, this is the place where the scene is filmed when the family escapes in their car after hiding in the Abbey. From the front door of the Abbey, this features the best view over Salzburg to the south which is where the high mountains are! We can go inside to the abbey to the chapel where the real Maria and Georg were married in 1927, being the only wedding held there.
The church shown in the film where they got married however, is about a 40 minute drive away from Salzburg in the town of Mondsee. If you want to go up there, we could do this on another day on a public bus or in your rental car or I can give you instructions how to take a public bus there to go on your own on another day.
After the abbey, we will wrap around to the other side of the Fortress facing the north side of the city, with a tremendous view of the old city and stop to gaze out over the city for 5 minutes or so.

Stop At: Residenzplatz Market, Residenzplatz 1, Salzburg 5020 Austria
After coming down the short hill from the Nonnberg Abbey, we will visit several sites in the city center where the film was shot. These include the famous Residenzplatz, which is where the Nazi troops were marching in the film. Also, this is where Maria runs through the plaza and splashes water in the horse fountain (largest Baroque fountain north of Italy) on her way from the abbey to the bus to go to the family home. We will also see where the real Maria did a cameo role next to the Cathedral during this scene! Also, around the other side of the Cathedral, I will show you where she got on the bus with the fortress in the background.

Stop At: St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter), Sankt-Peter-Bezirk off Kapitalpl., Salzburg 5020 Austria
We will then park the bikes and see the cemetery and catacombs from St. Peter's monastery, which is the same cemetery which was used to inspire the director to build a likeness on his Hollywood set, where the family hid from the Nazis.
The oldest continuous restaurant in Europe is in this monastery, so we will take a quick look inside. It was founded in 803 A.D.!!!

Stop At: Felsenreitschule, Hofstallgasse 1, 5020 Salzburg, Austria
This will be the last stop on the tour before we return our bikes. We will ride bikes through more of the old city to see several other filming spots as well as where the ground zero for the film crew was based. We will then wind up at the world renowned Felsenreitschule Theatre, or "Rock riding school" for horses, which was converted in the 1920s by Max Reinhardt from a riding school into a theater. This is the real theater where the concert scene near the end of the film took place where the family sung in front of the large Austrian audience and Nazis. This is the real home of the world famous Salzburger Festspiele (Salzburg Festival), which Max Reinhardt began in the 1920s as well. We won't be able to go inside unfortunately to see the lovely rock theater shown in the film because it is only open for private tours twice a day, but you can go the previous or following day to one of their private tours on your own (just google them). Then we will head through the city along the river back to the bike store just before 6pm, which is when they close, to return the bikes and then I can walk you to the bus stop by the bike store to direct you which bus to take to get you back to your hotel or the city center. The E-bikes will make it very easy for you to handle the 5.5 to 6 hour tour, and there is only one real hill that we will ride up to get to the Abbey, but that will be easy on the E bikes. It is just a short ride up. We can walk up that hill as well if you like. It doesn't take long and the view is spectacular!

- This approximately 6.5 hour tour is for Sound of Music and Trapp family fans who are comfortable riding bicycles for about 3.5 hours in total, with many relaxing stunningly beautiful stops along the multitude of nature bike paths around Salzburg to see in a relaxed manner. It is not difficult at all and the E-bikes are practically self propelled. I tend to go pretty slowly so that you can look at the scenery more than the path in front of you. I always go as slowly as the slowest person in the group! Children must be old enough to ride bikes with confidence. We use rented E-bikes that are really easy to use. Children should be at least 9 years old or so. You will get a great tour of all the most beautiful parts of Salzburg!
- Since my tour sizes are so small, you will get plenty of chances to ask questions or decide how long to spend at each stop. I generally keep my tour groups to 8 or fewer people.
- You will have to pay for your own E-bike rentals which are not included in the price of the tour. You will pay the rental fee directly to the bike store which will rent it to you for 25 Euro/person. Helmets cost 5 euro/person. The cost to tour Trapp Villa is 8 euro, which is paid directly to the Villa. It is totally worth it to see their family home from 1923 to 1939, which later became SS officer Heinrich Himmler's house after the family fled to America.
- We will meet at 12:00 noon at the Heart of Joy vegetarian (non-smoking) restaurant and then, after visiting the Mirabell Gardens on foot (near the restaurant), we will pick up the bikes at the bike store nearby to rent the bikes. Don't make any other plans after the tour until after 7:30pm, just in case we run late.

If you are a Sound of Music enthusiast, want to get some fresh air and would like to see some of the outer parts of Salzburg this is the trip for you. John is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the Trapp family but also points out some of the interesting sites of Salzburg. I would suggest that you do the tour at the front end of your visit it will give you a great foundation for the rest of your visit. As a closing comment it was great value for your money, the tour went for 8 hours and there was even more we could have seen. Great job John!!!
If you're looking for that off the beaten track way of seeing the sights of the Sound of Music John is the guy for you. Had a wonderful afternoon walking and riding around Salzburg. Highly recommend this tour.
