The road leading from the Obersalzberg (formerly Hitler's home and southern headquarters) to the Eagle's Nest parking lot is considered to be a feat of engineering. Perched at 1.834 m (6.017 ft), the building itself was a project of Martin Bormann's and given to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday as a teahouse for diplomats. The Eagle's Nest remained unscathed from the bombing of the Allied Forces during WWII. Since 1952 is has been open to the public as a mountaintop restaurant with a spectacular view and is accessed only by special mountain buses from Obersalzberg. The "Obersalzberg Documentation Center" located next to the car park at Obersalzberg offers interesting exhibits on the history of Obersalzberg, Hitler's regime, and WWII. It also gives access to part of the underground bunker system. Due to its high elevation, the Eagle's Nest is open in summer only, usually from mid of May until End of October. Lake Königsee, known the world over for its emerald green water and unique mountain landscape. Cruise silently across the lake on electric-powered boats and hear the famed Königsee echo. Continue on to the peninsula of St. Bartholomä with the unmistakable red onion domes atop its ancient pilgrimage church. Lying in majesterial aura and aloofness, surrounded by towering rock faces, the emerald Königsee resembles a fjord set in the Bavarian Alps. The Watzmann East Face almost reaches a staggering 1800 meters. The lake itself is a good 190 meters deep. Lake Königsee is a unique experience at any time of the year: in spring, mighty waterfalls thunder down over the steep rocks into the lake. Summer brings a rich, green contrast to the barren rock. Autumn paints a colorful tone poem of incomparable splendor. And if ice conditions allow, winter presents an unforgettable snow landscape. The boat trip to St. Bartholomä takes around 1 1/4 hours. However, the St. Bartholomä peninsula deserves a little more time for looking around and appreciating the beauty of nature in the raw on the numerous walks. The trip from Königsee over St. Bartholomä to Salet and back lasts about 1 3/4 hours. Guests who undertake the 10 to 15-minute walk from Salet are rewarded with a wonderful view: in deep tranquility at the end of the valley lies the Obersee. The Hagen mountains are reflected in its crystal-clear waters and the Röthbach waterfall plunges 400 meters from on high. In former times only privileged dignitaries were allowed to visit Berchtesgaden's salt mines, in operation since 1517. Today, this fascinating underground world can be visited by all thanks to continuous guided tours. Dressed in miner's clothing, the visitors enjoy the rides on a train, a funicular, a raft and down slides! They also learn about mining history and techniques thanks to the new film featuring the mascot "Pauli" and numerous exhibits with a recorded commentary.
