About this activity
Enter an amazing underground world of natural ice sculptures and formations – the World’s largest Ice Caves. From the city of Salzburg you will be driving into the heart of the Salzburg Alps passing en route the Castle of Werfen – film location of famous movies like ‘Where Eagle’s Dare’ with Richard Burton & Clint Eastwood or like `The Sound of Music´ with Julie Andrews and Christoph Plummer. High above the town of Werfen, a cable car will be taking you close to the mighty entrance to a mysterious Ice World. Cross the threshold to a dreamlike labyrinth of nearly 42 kilometers and uniquely formed cones. The guided tour through the ice palaces of crystal clear beauty and illuminated magnificent formations takes about 70 minutes. The average temperature is zero degrees all year round; therefore warm clothing, good shoes and sure footedness are required! Please be also aware that there is a 40 minute hike to the ice cave as well as 1.400 steps and 134 meter change in altitude in the cave itself! We recommend good physical fitness when exploring the World of Ice. As an alternative, it is also possible to visit the Fortress Hohenwerfen – one of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe dating back more than 900 years. Daily guided tours as well as a spectacular falcon show (at 03:15 pm) guarantee an unforgettable event. We operate our tour either in a Volkswagen or Mercedes minivan (up to 8 passengers) or Mercedes limousine (up to 3 passengers) and are happy to arrange your private tour according to personal interests and individual needs.
