About this activity

If it gets hectic in the city of Salzburg, treat yourself with a trip to the medieval city of Hallein. Only a few kilometers from the capital, you will find this charming old town with a lot of history, a Celtic Museum and a F.X.Gruber Museum. A visit to the nearby salt mine is worthwhile and offers beautiful views of the valley.

Enjoy beautiful landscapes on a relaxed 30-minutes drive to Hallein. Discover the village with a guided city tour: Walk from the Perner island across the river Salzach into the historic city center. Stroll along the Bayerhamerplatz to the Upper Market and to the parish church. Next to it you will find the well-kept grave F.X. Grubers. He lived in the house nearby, which contains the Gruber Museum today. A special exhibition piece is the guitar on which the song "Silent Night" was first played. Continue the city tour and see the Schöndorferplatz, the war memorial and the oldest historic brine house in Austria, before you return to the bus.

Within a few minutes by bus, you will reach the salt mine Dürrnberg above the town of Hallein. With a special train you will enter the tunnel and slide with the miners' slides further down. Experience the fascinating underground world with professional guides, discover kilometer-long tunnels, listen to stories about the miners' lives and discover how the "White Gold" got its name.

Next to the mine lays an interesting Celtic village, where you can see wooden huts, fire pits, craft houses and a princely Celtic grave. Then it's time to take the bus back to Salzburg.
