What to expect

Experience the Christmas spirit on this walking tour. Learn about our winter traditions, be impressed by the history of the song Silent Night annd find out how our past influenced our Christmas celebration.

Residenzplatz - Salzburger Christkindlmarkt

We start at the Residence square, right in front of the big Christmas Tree. Walk around the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt. Find out about the historical background of the Christmas market and some of the traditional, lovingly made, crafts at different Christkindl stalls.

Salzburger Dom - Silent night, Holy Night story

The baptismal font in Salzburg Cathedral, the assistant pastor Joseph Mohr or the musican Johann Michael Haydn have one thing in common - they are somehow connected with the genesis of the song "Silent Night, Holy Night". A lot happened exactly 200 years ago in Salzburg and the surrounding area. Soon you will know where and how the song was created and how much this song effected the people and even wars. It is an exciting story to know.

St. Peter Bezirk - Benediktinerkloster

The walk continues with a view of the fortress Hohensalzburg from the cathedral square. Next stop is at the St. Peter district. The Benedictine monastery gives a pleasant contrast to the princely city and offers beautiful impressions of some church towers and the Stiftskeller St. Peter. The monastery received a letter asking for clarification about the existence of the song Silent Night. And the letter of the "authentic cause" of the song Silent Night was written.

Salzburger Fetspielhaus - Universität Salzburg

After WW II many friends started to sing Christmas corals. This ideas was so well received that Salzburg offers great concerts with traditional christmas songs at the Salzburg Festival Hall. Another famous song - " Edelweiss" - was filmed here for the Sound of Music Movie. And later the Trapp family sang the song Silent Night at their concerts.

Universitätsplatz

From the Salzburg Festspielhaus continue to the University square where you will discover the back side of Mozart's birthplace. The Salzburg Food Market stands offer wonderful Kletzenbrot, cheese, vegetables and fruits.
In contrast of the Christmas hustle and bustle you will find silence in the white designed but precious baroque University Church.

Alter Markt - erster Christbaum in Salzburg

Many people still use the well-known coffee houses at the Old Market square as a meeting place with family or friends. Already in the 19th century the high society met for coffee and cake. Over the years, the Christmas tradition developed here with the first Christmas tree in Salzburg.

Mozartplatz - Salzburg Museum

The end of the tour will be at the Mozart square. This monument reminds everybody of the extraordinary musician W.A.Mozart who still influences the lifes of many people. The same effect we experience with the song Silent Night. Learn more in the exhibition of the Salzburg Museum "Silent Night 200 - The Story. The Message. The Present".

Linger longer at the Salzburg Chrsitkindlmarkt. There are daily interesting programs and beautiful music that will tune you to the Christmas season. Have fun and a contemplative Advent season.
