About this activity
After pickup from your hotel in central Salzburg, travel by minivan or Mercedes E-Class across the Austrian-German border into scenic Bavaria. Pass acres of farmland and picturesque farmhouses as you make your way to Obersalzberg, the site of Adolph Hitler’s residential complex.

At the foot of Obersalzberg, transfer into a bus fitted with a special engine and brakes for a 4-mile (6.5 km) trip along a road just 13 feet (4-meters) wide with a 22% grade.

When the road ends, walk through a 407-foot (124-meter) long tunnel to a World War II-era elevator built directly into the mountain. This opulent elevator is lined with brass, mirrors and leather and takes you inside the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus).

Though the Eagle’s Nest was built as a retreat for Adolph Hitler as a 50th birthday gift, Hitler rarely visited the house. Today, this historical site located at an elevation of 6,017 feet (1,834 meters) is famous for its incredible views.

Walk around the property and up to the summit of Obersalzberg to admire stunning views of lush green valleys and the snow-capped Bavarian and Austrian Alps. Feel free to take plenty of photos and ask your knowledgeable guide as many questions as you wish about the history and significance of the Eagle’s Nest. Being on a private tour means you can take your time and get the most out of your visit.

On the way back to Salzburg, stop briefly at Berchtesgaden, which once was the site of important Third Reich buildings but today is a popular and lovely recreational area. You'll have 45 minutes in Berchtesgaden to explore and get a bite to eat (own expense).

Your 5-hour private trip to the Eagle’s Nest ends with drop-off at your Salzburg hotel.

Daniel was a great guide showing us all around the Kehlsteinhaus, underground tunnels and sights around Austria. Communication between us and the tour operator was really quick and punctual, everything was well organised and we were looked after from pick up to drop off. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in the history behind the Kehlsteinhaus. Thank you !

This was our favorite tour of all three weeks in Europe. The views were amazing and the weather turned out mostly clear. You could see all the way to Salzburg. Our guide was very informative telling all about the Eagle's Nest and the area as it was during the war. He told us about various points of interest in the city as we drove back to our hotel.

The best tour ever, had the most amazing guide all decked out in his Austrian outfit, his knowledge was outstanding and being a private tour made it just that little bit more special. The scenery in Salzburg has to be seen to believe, we saw mountains, green hills and beautiful lakes, what else could you ask for. A tour we would highly recommend to anybody

Beautiful scenery. We love the private tours because they are geared towards us. If we want to stay longer at one thing, we can. If we aren't as interested in another, we can leave at any time. Definitely recommend this trip!

Good tour with Gert. Took time to explain the significance of the Eagles Nest, was savvy enough to make sure we took the 1st bus up to the top and to miss the queues on the way to the top. Took us to Konigsee along the back roads which was enjoyable. Had a dip in the lake on a very hot day.
