Ridge Walk to Refugio Frey from Bariloche

About this activity
Frey is the most popular mountain hut in Bariloche area. It was built beside Toncek Lagoon at the end of the valley surrounded by beautiful and astonishing granite spires.

You have basically two ways of getting up there: by the normal traditional trail or from Catedral’s ski resort ridge. This option implies taking the chairlift all the way up to the top and trekking from there. The main advantage of this choice is that you gain most of the height from the beginning and the views are stunning.

Once you get on the ridge, you start traversing towards Frey area. You have a 360 degree view, including Mount Tronador, Rucaco Valley, Nahuel Huapi Lake and an uncountable number of adjacent rugged mountains in every direction.

The trail has loose rocks, scree and there is some scrambling involved. Along the trail, we will pass by “La piedra inclinada”, a particular huge inclined rock, a relatively flat area called the “Football court” and Schmoll Lagoon. It is necessary to descend some meters to arrive to the hut. It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to get there. We can have lunch there, probably meet some rock climbers or see them like little ants on the cracks of the spires.

Then, we will complete the loop descending by the normal trail back to Catedral ski resort base. The hike down exits the valley through the magic forest of Lengas (southern beechs). The last part of the trail goes through a forest in recuperation process due to important forest fires in the early 90’s. We will also have a closer view of Lago Gutierrez in this section. The estimate time to complete the way down is also about 3 hours.

Our private transport will drive you back to your hotel in Bariloche.

Important note: If the chairlift from Catedral Ski resort is not working (due to strong winds or any other climatic reason) we go up to Frey by the normal trail and return the same way.
