About this activity
Learn more about this unique people group in Belize, who first arrived in Belize nearly 200 years ago. The Garifuna people still sometimes wear traditional ethnic clothing of yellow, black and white, and have their own flag of the same colors. Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th, is a nationally recognized day to commemorate when the Garifuna people first settled in Belize in what is now Dangriga Town on November 19th, 1823. If you’re in town during this holiday, your guide will take you to the re-enactment of when the Garifuna people first arrived on the shores of Belize. Locals in Dangriga dress up in traditional clothing and paddle in dug-out canoes as part of the re-enactment. Stick around for the fantastic street festival and parade with dancing, drumming and punta music. Try some tasty Garifuna dishes such as hudut (fish cooked in coconut milk), fried plantains, and cassava dishes. If you visit Belize during another part of the year, your guide will still take you to Dangriga Town where you can visit the Drums of Our Fathers monument, dedicated to the Garifuna culture. You can also stop in at the Lebeha Drumming Center in the nearby village of Hopkins. There you can watch, listen, and participate in cultural dances and learn how to play the Garifuna drums. The whole family will love this tour!
